• HAL stands for Heuristic Algorithmic Computer.
• Rock Hudson walked out of the premiere complaining "Will someone tell me what the hell this is about?"
• Spawned a sequel film, "2010", and three sequel novels: "2010: The Year We Make Contact," 2081: The Third Odyssey," and "3001: The Final Odyssey."
• Both the book 2001 and the movie 2001 were created in tandem, with Kubrick and Clarke collaborating on both the screenplay and the book.
• The plot of 2001 was a much larger version of 2001 author Arthur C. Clarke's short story The Sentinel, which centered around an alien artifact on the moon, which later became the monolith in 2001.
• Of the 141 minute run time, 88 of those contain no dialogue.
• To achieve the effect of the Discovery crew running in artificial gravity while in the centrifuge of the ship, the camera would be placed at one point on the set and the centrifuge would rotate like a giant ferris wheel so that the crew members would appear to running in a circle.
• The set of the centrifuge in the Discovery shuttle was thirty-eight feet in diameter, ten feet wide and costs $750,000 to construct.
• The first lines of the film are not spoken until 25:38.
• Much as the film "The Wizard of Oz" has been observed to sync with Pink Floyd's album "Dark Side of the Moon" (aka the "Dark Side of the Rainbow" effect). 2001's "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite" sequence has been observed to sync with the song "Echoes" of Pink Floyd's album "Meddle".
• Despite being a noted artistic touch, the use of classical music was originally intended as a placeholder while composer Alex North completed the score.
