Plot

A Bugs Life follows the story of Flik. An avid inventor ant who's always looking for ways to better his fellow ants, even if they only see him as a nuisance.

The Princess (Princess Atta) is furious, however, Flik has come up with a plan to save the colony. He proposes that he goes out across the valley to where all the city bugs live to find some tough bugs to come back and help the ants fight off the Grasshoppers for good. The counsel debate over it, and. come to the conclusion that on his mission, Flik will not make it and perish. They grant him his quest and send him on his way.

Flik uses a dandelion seed to float across the valley to the other side. He manages to avoid the birds that gather there and reach the city. Meanwhile, a group of failing circus bugs are hitting rock bottom and their shows are being deserted, until the lead flea pulls a stunt, which after a mishap, almost costs him his life, but winning back the audience. The lead flea is not happy with his workers negligence though, and fires them all. Depressed, they hit a bar style can for one last get together. That's when a group of flies, who one of the performers insulted during the show, come by looking for trouble. Flik catches the wrong impression from the fight, b eing there for only a few minutes and comes to the false conclusion that the performer bugs are actually warrior bugs. The performer bugs think Flik is proposing they put on a show back at his colony. They agree to go with him and end up back at the colony.

However, back at the colony, the Grasshoppers have arrived and, without their meal, start trying to cause trouble. Eventually, they give the ants until the last leaf of autumn drops to come up with their food or bad things will happen. The ants are trying desperately to get the amount necessary to appease the Grasshoppers, when Flik returns with the 'Warrior' bugs. The colony is amazed and rejoice at the fact that Flik has saved them, and stop collecting food for the Grasshoppers. It's during a celebration festival that Flik discovers his mistake. However, not wanting to be wrong in the eyes of Atta, he lies and sticks to the story. He comes up with a plan with the circus bugs to build a giant bird out of leaves and sticks, to scare off the Grasshoppers. All is going according to plan, until the lead flea from the circus comes to the colony looking for the circus bugs, revealing to everyone Flik's mistake. Furious, Atta banishes Flik from the colony and orders the ants to continue collecting as much food as possible.

Depressed, Flik joins the circus bugs on their trip, until he's visited by a young ant from the colony, who's always looked up to Flik. She also happens to be Queen's granddaughter. Dot convinces Flik to come back to save the colony using the bird idea when the Grasshoppers come, thus redeeming himself. The bugs tie up the lead flea and turn the wagon around, heading back for the colony. All the young ants help Flik and the circus bugs out in carrying out the plan. The circus bugs put on a fake show for the Grasshoppers and the ants prepare themselves inside the bird.

They release the bird and all is going according to plan, until the Flea gets out and mistakes the bird for and actual bird. The Flea then sets the bird on fire, causing the plan to fail. Flik stands up to Hopper but gets beaten by him. Flik continues to talk, then it begins to rain and the ants scatter. In all the commotion, Hopper attempts to kidnap Flik. The circus bugs then take chase, weaving through branches and twigs. However, they get stuck as Hopper is more slim and nimble than themselves. As Hopper's flying away, Atta flies in to save Flik. However, Flik gets an idea and instead of going to the ant hill, he tells Atta to take him another way. When Hopper catches up with them, a REAL bird flies in. Hopper, trying to not be fooled by the same trick twice, stands up to the bird, but gets taken away and fed to the bird's young. Order is restored and the ants no longer serve the Grasshoppers. The circus bugs head out on their way and Atta chooses Flik as her mate.
