Plot Summary

From treating siblings as a friend to being a captain of the royal guard, Shining Armor is a pretty awesome sibling. Unlike you, you unemployed jerk.

While enjoying a picnic with her friends Twilight Sparkle is interrupted by Spike, who had run all the way from town to deliver a special letter from Princess Celestia. The letter asks them to come to Canterlot to help set up the festivities for an upcoming royal wedding. While this is exciting news for the girls, the letter fails to mention who the wedding is actually for; Spike admits that he should've given them the formal invitation first. The invitation states that it is for the wedding of one Princess Mi Amore Cadenza and, to Twilight's surprise, Shining Armor: who is captain of the Canterlot royal guard and, most importantly, her older brother.

Anti-Hate Shields are canon.

The girls are honored to take part in the ceremony and take the next available train out to Canterlot. As mentioned in the letter, the girls have all been given special tasks: Applejack is put in charge of the banquet, Pinkie Pie is to host the reception, Fluttershy will conduct her bird choir for the actual wedding, Rarity is asked to design dresses for the bride and her bridesmaids, Rainbow Dash is requested to perform a Sonic Rainboom after the exchanging of vows, and Twilight is to make sure everything runs smoothly. But Twilight feels insulted that Shining Armor--who was her only real friend while growing up in Canterlot--didn't tell her this life-changing news personally; she has never even met his bride-to-be or has let alone heard of her. Not only that, but suggests to her that she isn't important to him anymore. So after they all arrive in Canterlot, while the girls head out to begin their assigned tasks, Twilight goes to confront her brother at the castle. Shining Armor is delighted to see Twilight and explains that the main reason he couldn’t tell her was because a threat had been made against Canterlot and, because of his duty as captain, he has to remain to keep the city safe with a magic barrier. This calms Twilight down and Shining Armor then asks her be his best mare for the wedding. Also, he reveals that his bride is actually another fond figure from her past: Twilight's former foal-sitter, Princess Cadance.

Bridlezillas.

When a delighted Twilight finally meets her old caretaker, she learns that she has a totally different attitude. While the Cadance of her childhood was beautiful, caring, and always able to spread love to those around her, the one before Twilight now rude, bossy, and doesn't appear to recognize her; as well as having a menacing aura about her. Throughout the day, while Twilight checks up on the other girls' tasks, she watches Cadance act prissy and insincere around them, adding to Twilight’s growing disgust. Later that night, Twilight tells the girls that she believes Cadance is "the worst bride ever" and unsuitable for her brother to marry. But the girls disagree, seeing that any negative attitude she had displayed must be due to the stress caused from planning her big day. They add that Twilight may be acting a bit too possessive of Shining Armor, which outrages her.

Evil Spells: Apply directly to the forehead.

Since Twilight feels that the girls are too caught up in the planning to see the problem, she decides to vent to Shining Armor personally. Though before Twilight can even bring up her concerns, Cadance pulls Shining Armor into another room to talk to him. Twilight spies the two and catches Candance using a spell on him that makes his eyes glow and go cross-eyed, leaving her to conclude that Cadance is actually evil. She heads back to the bridle suite to warn her friends, where she learns that Cadance had asked the girls to be her new bridesmaids. Since the girls are now more than convinced that Cadance is good-hearted, Twilight is left to handle the situation on her own.

EVIL!

The next day, Twilight barges into the wedding rehearsal and confidently accuses Cadance of being evil. Along with her poor attitude and the mysterious disappearance of her old bridesmaids, Twilight claims that Cadance had been using an evil spell on her brother. After Cadance runs away in tears, an angered Shining Armor tells Twilight Sparkle that there were actual good explanations for her behavior. First, that she was using her magic to heal his migraines, which had started after he began holding up the exhausting magic barrier around the city. Second, that her bridesmaids were fired when Cadance learned that they were just using her to get close to Canterlot's elite. Finally, that her attitude was due to her being overworked from planning the wedding herself.

Before he leaves to comfort her bride, Shining Armor revokes the offer to make Twilight his best mare and forbids her from coming to the wedding. Along with the girls, an outraged Princess Celestia leaves to comfort Cadance, but she also orders Twilight to think about what she did. As Twilight is left alone in the grand hall, she realizes that she may have been too protective of her brother and that, because of her actions, she may have lost his good will forever. As Twilight laments to herself, Cadance approaches her. Twilight begs for her forgiveness but, instead, Cadance surrounds her in a ring of fire and sends her sinking into the floor; walking away with an evil grin.
