Filmed with a tiny crew under arduous conditions almost analogous to those of its central character, Aguirre: Der Zorn Gottes tells the tale of how a conquistador's monomaniacal hunger for the undiscovered riches of the new world bring him, and those around him, nothing but madness and terrible suffering.
The titular Aguirre is played with ferocious energy by Klaus Kinski, adding another epic entry to the string of performances coaxed out of him by Herzog during their ongoing collaboration and vendetta.
