Here we have the trailer for the new film based on Alex Cross (the wildly popular character in James Patterson's novels) starring Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox. Perry has taken over for Morgan Freeman who played the character in the first two adaptations of the character in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.

That means Tyler Perry has some big shoes to fill, which makes me intrigued. He is a national phenomenon in the film world, and how good will he be when he isn't directing or writing his own characters? From this trailer, I'm not convinced he is the next bad-ass detective action star, but I'm willing to be proven wrong. And...what happened to Matthew Fox and why is he so skinny?! He kind of looks like he is going the way of Christian Bale in The Machinist, which is enough to make any character scary.

Thoughts? Great casting? Awful casting? Awesome movie?

Tyler Perry seems like a fine choice for this film. Although I would have preferred Denzel Washington. The idea of a Tyler Perry movie that is not a comedy seem foreign to me.

I am also picking up a Heath Ledger Joker/ Hannibal Lector vibe from the villain. That could make for some interesting dialogue.

I never read any Patterson books. Are the Alex Cross books any good?

Denzel is too old, not as old as Morgan Freeman. I have literally no opinion on Tyler Perry as i have never seen a single film of his,

I gotta be honest thought, that trailer completely lost me at the 'From Rob Cohen Director Of Fast & The Furious' flashed up, then you saw Rocket Launchers and other stupid shit like that. I'd give it a watch but i'd probably put money on the original books not being so action oriented. If i'm wrong, then fair enough. I watched Along Came A Spider and don't remember it being so actiony, but more of a 'whodunnit' film.

I'm not sure about Perry being a cop, I've only ever seen him do comedies, the only dramatic role I've seen him do is Star Trek. For some reason, I feel that this movie is this year's Abduction.

I am really anticipating this movie. Rob Cohen makes fun films, Patterson has written amazing stuff, and the trailer is thrilling. Also, Im glad to see Perry might get recognition for his acting not as Medea. He is really good, but people don't know that since they associate him with the niche market of Medea films.

it seems more like THE LINCOLN LAWYER to me.

@aseddon130: I disagree. Harrison Ford was able to do Indiana Jones at 64-65. If he could do that, Denzel should have no problems at 57. Not only that, Denzel looked like he was doing fine in Safe House, another action movie.

@RockinKemosabe: I agree with your concerns.

I don't really buy Perry as bad ass cop blame the Madea character. Mathew Fox looks crazy as a fox (PUNS!!) and that I buy. Perry could surprise me.

Overall looks decent might be good.

I was onboard with this until the faux-dubstep and "Do not cross Alex Cross"

"Welcome back, 47."

The only thing that concerns me is that Tyler Perry looks way too serious in this film.

But on the other hand, he's finally starring in a movie that gets him away from Madea; the character he's played a lot lately, and he's not directing the movie either, so I have to say that I'm intrigued.

Also, I did not realize that guy who's playing the villain is Matthew Fox. He looks so different than I remembered in Vantage Point.

Matthew Fox doesn't look even close to as skinny as Bale in the Machinist. He's just got a very lean physique in this movie but quite tone. Bale had no tone and was just sickly.

I'm interested just because I want to see Matthew Fox be a creep.

The rest of the trailer looks very typical and bland. Not even a memorable line to hang on to.

Tyler Perry doing something that is not Tyler Perry? I am interested. Matthew Fox being Alex Cross? Even more interested.

It feels like its been a long time since Along Came A Spider was released.

Denzel could play the character, but then again I think Denzel could play any black male role in a movie so I'm more than a bit biased. He's a good actor and the character is approaching I'm not too old for this shit age anyways.

Tyler Perry seems decent enough though. It's odd to me that they went for one of the later Alex Cross novels. I'm a fanboy of the series but they started falling off in quality long before the one this is based off of came out. Then again, I haven't read this one so maybe it's a return to form.

I think Idris Elba, would've been a better choice for a young Alex Cross

I was getting ready to post the same exact thing. From what I've seen of his work in Luther and Takers I think he would have fit the bill perfectly.

He was originally going to be cast, then they suddenly changed it, like februrary last year.

Very disappointing.

Lol, John C. McGinley's appearence made me chuckle. I wonder if he'll call Alex Cross by a girl's name...perhaps Madea (*wink wink*)
