Finally watched this film for the first time in years and it was not exactly what I remembered it as. When I watched it I was pretty young, this possibly being the first pair breasts I had even seen in a film, but I remember the ending of film being relatively upbeat and while I'm not going to say explicitly what it was, I found that watching it as an adult the ending and overall tone of the film was incredibly morbid. Even as a young child I could easily identify that the main theme in the movie was love, however I was too stupid (some would say I still am) to recognize the other theme that is explored, life beyond our own.
Maybe I was reading into it too much, but it seems like the message was that we had better live life while we can because there is an afterlife but its not clouds and happiness but instead the most incredible and incomprehensible suffering that not even the most imaginative mind could wrap its head round. With that in the back of my mind when the end credits appeared to some creepy music I found myself with a similar feeling that I had when I finished watching the Road. Hell worse even, at least the road had some kind of fragment of hope at the end of it.
Also was it just me, or is what happens to Emily at the very end of the film one of the most painful scenes to look at. Something about it really made me feel like she was experiencing something so much worse than physical pain, it was almost too hard for me to watch. I've never had many problems with gore or torture movies. Hostel is fine, sure I cringed during Martyrs but there something about this scene that really effected me.
Also if anyone is interested, here's my video review for it which also shows some of the said scene with Emily.
