Toonami returns for April Fools.

Last night, (by the time you read this) a friend pointed me in the direction of Adult Swim, which was broadcasting classic Toonami anime. DBZ, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing... it was there.  They even had a new TOM review for Mass Effect 3. Except for a Tenchi offshoot that made no sense, and the fact that my cable decided to have a seizure the whole time, it was neat to see.

Which brings me to a question. Why isn't Cartoon Network doing this more often? Better question, why isn't Toonami still on CN?

Think about this. I don't know how long they've been doing it, but Nickelodeon has a block dedicated to its old 90's programs late at night. Wouldn't it make sense to do the same thing for Toonami? Maybe on the weekdays they can cut cut into Adult Swim's usual time slots, but that may be unfair to the fans of Adult Swim. (regardless of what you say of their programs' quality and interest) But I think night time is the best period to do this since the people who would be interested in it would be up at that hour. (I think.)

Would there be a way to do this so that every one is happy? Or rather,  would it be in their best interest to bring back Toonami if only for nostalgia sake? Was there a reason why Toonami was canned in the first place?

Definitely looks like a April Fool's prank to me, but I also think it would make sense if Adult Swim (Cartoon Network) had done something like this either on weekday nights, or on Saturdays after they bump their newer anime screenings into an earlier time both for nostalgia purposes like what Nick did for their 90's programming.

As to why in blue blazes that Toonami was canned, I still have no clear idea except that I thought it was because they fell into the recession like most other people and businesses did in the US. :(

My friends lit my phone up about Toonami man it was awesome. They need to bring that back. Even if its only for Saturdays or something I don't really like Adult Swim.

Oh, damn, really sad I missed that.  Since the Nickelodeon thing worked out so well for them, maybe CN is testing out something?  I doubt that many people would miss one more place to watch Family Guy on weekday nights.  Cautious optimism?

Edit: But given how Adult Swim doesn't really seem to care about the anime crowd... probably only going to be a one-day thing.

Adult Swim still has Bleach and Cowboy Bebop which are still very popular. As for the other animes, unsure. I don't know what the more popular AS shows are; last time I payed attention it was Aqua Teen, Venture Brothers, Metaloclypse and Robot Chicken.

Toonami aired Anime? That's not the Toonami I remember. I remember it having a ton of cartoons but I never remember any stuff anybody here is talking about.

@Paulrus: When AS was upfront about ratings (I haven't watched it in a while), Sunday runs of Family Guy was pretty much always the winner. I only ever watched anime and The Venture Bros.

@CrimsonAvenger: Over time it shifted away from it, but in the early 2000s there was a bunch of anime like Tenchi Muyo, DBZ, Zoids, Big O, and Outlaw Star before Cartoon Network created the Adult Swim block.

From my knowledge, they're also re-airing Durarara!! and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, but I don't think they're as popular as their counterparts on that program block.

At first it had stuff like Thundercats and Johnny Quest and even Sailor Moon. But then they started to focus on anime. One could argue that anime first started on CN through Toonami. Dragonball Z made it to the States through the block and was there for the longest time, same as Yu Yu Hakusho, even though that got its start during the early days of Adult Swim and got moved and edited to be more teen-freindly. They later added some other like Pokemon (I think) Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, a lot of stuff from the Gundam franchise, and Hamtaro for some reason. Big O, which failed to make a dent in Japan, was greenlit for more episodes because of its success when it was put on Toonami. I'm saying Toonami a lot.

No one watched it, that is why. Toonami at its height could not touch Adult Swim on its best day. More people would rather watch reruns of Family Guy than an episode of Big O.

Toonami used to be the best. And later on at night in what used to be Adult Swim, its certainly changed drastically since, you could catch uncensored versions of more violent and adult anime. It's where I was first introduced to something that wasn't Hamtaro or DBZ and got deeper into some cooler and mature shows.

Even an afternoon or evening block of shows, maybe an hour or two leading up to Adult Swim, would be awesome. Something a little edgier but aimed more towards teens.

Pokemon was never on Toonami that I could remember. It was always on my local WGN station Sunday mornings as part of their cartoon lineup.

I came about DBZ, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, and Cowboy Bebop because of Toonami. They also had another good series, Escaflowne. I remember once a month, usually a Friday night, they would debut an anime movie (DBZ, etc.) but still it was really fun. I also was in high school and wayyyy more into anime than I am now. I do miss it at times since some of those series (Cowboy Bebop) are still really good.

That Toonami stuff will probably make a comeback seeing on how AS keeps asking people what they think about it. That's a bit much for something that might have been an April Fools thing. I'm not gonna watch it cuz I don't like any of the new stuff that plays that night and I can watch the old stuff elsewhere but it would be cool to see Tom doing the bumps again.
