On a nighttime cruise, Zim discovers a new enemy after it destroys his cruiser- THE BEES. A group of saucer nuts capture his cruiser and he has to get it back. Then, when Zim is allergic to water, he seeks revenge on Dib, who attempts to exploit this.
Following up Dark Hervest, these episodes are rather light, with Attack of the Saucer Morons being focused a lot more on humor than a plot between Zim and Dib or something to move the show forward. The Wettening is essentially a one-off plot: it doesn't advance the plot, and the events, though world changing, are never mentioned again.
Attack of the Saucer Morons
A cop is driving along in his car when he sees headlights coming right at him, down his lane. He freaks out and shifts lanes, but the headlights change too, playing a deadly game of chicken with him. In a panic, he swerves the wheel to the side, falls off the freeway, and collides with a giant weenie stand. Which then explodes. Turns out that it was just Zim, flying around to test how strong Earth's defense and law enforcement is. His conclusion- PATHETIC! Pathetic, just like everything else on this planet...
Except the bees. The happiest bee in the world crashes into the Voot cruiser right as he's reveling, and the cruiser is immediately incapacitated. It crashes into a forest and ejects Zim (don't worry, the bee is OK). He tries to call Gir to pick him up, but Gir is out clubbing, so Zim has to return to his house and pick up a carrier for the Cruiser and come and pick it up the next day. It's an isolated area in the woods, so he feels it'll be OK to just leave it.
How he doesn't notice the old man staring at him from the top of a ladder with a banner advertising a UFO Convention the next day is never made clear. But that man is there, and so is that banner (and to those who care, the ladder is, as well). He changes the banner- now the UFO Convention is TODAY.
At the house, Zim pulls down the Carrier and decides to disguise it somehow. The computer turns it into something that the humans probably won't notice: a giant pig. He puts on his hobo disguise and heads out the door, pig in tow, and heads to the woods.
The convention is in full swing, so he leaves the pig tied to a tree and goes to check it out. Someone stops him, declaring that they are the Children of the Bright and Shiny Saucer (they all have Flying Saucer hats) and that the downed alien love ship is theirs to share with humanity. But humanity must prove it's worthy... Zim says it's his dream to be worthy, so the initiation begins in a closed-off tent on the top of a hill. Reminiscent of the beaver/taxi scene in Bestest Friend, there's a lot of noises and screaming before Zim hobbles out, a saucer now attached to his head.
But they've found the pig. They claim they found a grip of alien artifacts aside from that, including a blender and the torn-looking Chihuahua. Zim grimaces, but then a voice at his shoulder (or above it. Zim's short) starts talking about how the pig is representative of man's piglike affinity for exploration. Right then, someone messes with the controls and it opens up, biting someone's head. Zim starts trying to wrestle the controls back, but his disguise comes off. Everyone starts closing in on him and, as he prepares for the worst (there are flashes of him imagining himself being dissected), he closes his eyes.
And when nothing continues to happen, he looks again and sees that they're worshipping him. They then lift him up, and as they carry him away, Gir finally gets home and calls Zim, agreeing to come and pick him up.
As Zim waits, all the saucer morons are inside a tent, staring at him. They gasp as he lifts his hand and "ooooh" as he scratches himself. Everyone then begins to surge forward, asking for things like blessings from him. Suddenly, a large robot in a suit walks into the test and declares that he is Government Man, sent from the government, and that Zim is an experimental aircraft. He carries Zim to the ship, and he starts to put it in the carrier when Gir is bumped and falls out of the suit.
The saucer morons start to surge forward again, but Zim loads the pig and they start to fly away (the pig oinks as it goes). They're almost in the clear, getting rid of a hanger on and destroying a playground, when a familiar happy tune starts to play. A tiny bee smacks into the carrier and down they go.
Right into the middle of a debate about whether or not aliens are real. And Zim without a Cruiser Carrier Carrier to get himself out of it!
A sticky white substance is covering the classroom- children are dangling from the ceiling while stuck to it, it's puddled on the floor, and it's all over Melvin's mouth as Ms. Bitters asks him if eating paste was worth all of this. He nods yes, and Zim laughs at him, but then he notices that it starts to rain. Apparently the school celebrates rain days, because everyone is let out, kids streaming out the windows even.
The kids run out and begin singing the rain song.
The Rain Song Lyrics from Invader Zim "Rain Rain Rain
We love rain.
Splash splash splash.
Fun fun fun.
We love rain.
We love rain.
Splash splash splash.
Fun fun fun!
Rain rain rain!
They're floating around in the sky, but Zim seems apprehensive about the rain and hesitates enough for Dib to start mocking him, asking if he's afraid of the water. Zim defiantly walks out, but his skin immediately begins to start smoking, and he runs off and finds Gaz, walking under an umbrella. He throws the umbrella to the side and picks her up, using her to shield him, and right as she's about to murder him, the rain stops and he lets her go. Vowing surprisingly light revenge, she's about to push Zim into a puddle when Dib steps out and splashes them both. She's soaked, but Dib is happy to just watch Zim writhe around on the floor in pain.
As they walk home, Dib is gloating about how he will once more save the planet, but Zim pops out and scares HIM into a puddle. The stage is set, and the water warfare begins. At school the next day, during crafts, Dib takes it psychological and turns on a faucet juuuust enough so that it starts to drip every few seconds. Zim twitches with every droplet that hits the sink, and is clearly thankful when he can finally leave.
After school, Dib has one last surprise- a water balloon. It hits Zim in the chest, flops around and then explodes. Dib laughs, but Zim stands up and vows that he will have revenge now that he knows about water balloon technology and vows to finish the fight that coming Monday at school. Then he notices part of the balloon is stuck to him. He tries to shake it off, but it's stuck, and he sees he got some glue on him at school during crafts.
At home, Zim starts running simulations and finds that glue repels water- if he covers himself in paste, then he can withstand that dreaded dihydrogen monoxide, no matter how bad the onslaught. He then starts to draw up plans for a weapon, much like Dib, over at the Membrane house. A montage of him building it goes, and then it's Monday.
Everyone is gathering around Dib to see what this weird thing is that he's carrying around. It's got two arms and a water cooler on the back full of water. He looks for Zim and finds... a cowering Zim standing a little bit away. Dib calls him, but Zim doesn't move. Dib starts to get a little frustrated, and when Zim continues to not move, he decides to just use his weapon.
Water drains from the cooler and fills a balloon that was held in one of the arms. An elastic band stretches between them, and the water balloon holds in place as he stretches it like a giant slingshot, aims, and shoots. It goes right through Zim, and we find out that it's really a hologram.
Then we see where Zim really is. He's in a spaceship and he starts to suck all of the water off of Earth and into a planet-sized water balloon. He ties it, aims right at Dib's head and lets the water balloon fall to its destination. It demolishes satellites, goes through the atmosphere, and hits a flagpole right next to Dib, popping on that and leveling the entire city.
Dib floats up and shudders to himself, muttering "the wettening..." as Zim walks by, unscathed, and goes down into the lab of his house.
Or would, but his head gets stuck on the way down. Apparently, he's fine, because he's back in the next episode.
Steve Ressel has two cameos here. In Attack of the Saucer Morons, he's the man who grabs the baby in the playground just before the flying pig hits it. Then, in The Wettening, when the water is rushing the city, he's the one who's buying a hot dog and looks at it when he starts hearing the water rushing towards him, like the hot dog is making the noise.
Jhonen has one- in The Wettening, he's seen sitting in his house by his piranas when the water in their tank disappears and one of them jumps into his drink. He only notices when it goes down his throat and starts trying to eat its way out.
