It glows!
It glows!

It's been rumored--and by rumored, I mean almost entirely confirmed--in the last couple of days that Nike would soon be announcing the one thing every kid who ever saw Back to the Future Part II has been quietly hoping for as we've grown closer and closer to the film's then far-flung futuristic year of 2015. Namely, the release of Marty McFly's super awesome self-lacing Nike shoes. Guess what? It's actually happening.

At a supersecret event in which shoe bloggers--I guess if I get to have this job, I can't make fun of people for being shoe bloggers, but still--to a supersecret location to unveil the hot new kicks. Much like Michael J. Fox's sweet shoes in the movie, these shoes glow. In fact, they actually can be charged, and will stay glowing for up to five hours at a time. The future, she is here, and she is magnificent.

However, ponying up for futuristic footwear won't be as easy as you might hope. Only 1,500 pairs of the new Nike MAG sneakers will be produced. They'll be auctioned off on eBay, and all proceeds from the shoe's sales will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research.

So while it's unlikely that any of us non-shoe-obsessed types will get our hands on these kicks, there is something rather comforting about the fact that they'll be benefiting such a good cause, and frankly, just knowing that they exist. We are a better world with Marty McFly's shoes in them than we are without them.

I would buy them but I know they are going to cost an arm and a leg.

unfortunately they dont lace like they do in the movie.

These shoes just glow, no auto-lace. But they're still pretty cool looking.

Man, I'd like a pair of these. I'd also like to pay rent for the next two months, though. Decisions, decisions...

@Kentobi: @MisterMouse: The word I read was they do.

"Nike is only producing 1,500 pairs of the new MAG model shoes will be produced."

I imagine that line needs to be reworded ;).

These are awesome and I wish I could get a pair but I doubt they'll be out here in the UK and on top of that would cost too much money :(

@mfpantst: Not they can be 100% trusted, but Gizmodo says no on the power lacing (even though Nike has patented the technology)

People would just let you live wherever you wanted with those kicks.

Yeah I see that now. I had read all the stuff yesterday pointing to the patent as evidence the shoes would. I'm still holding out hope.

Maybe the money should go to the 10 year-old Indian kids that make these shoes for $50c a day so Nike can sell them for $200 a pair.

Oh, wait... Shit just got real.

Holy crap. Man if these weren't limited, and assumingly really expensive, i would totally buy a pair.

For me the shoes were a distant second to the hoverboard (and now as an adult, Mr Fusion would be pretty handy too), but I get where you're coming from.

The insta-lacing doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. I mean, you can get those heart rate monitors that use air to fasten themselves around the wrist pretty cheap. Maybe not ideal for comfort though.

Okay, I did not know they are for charity. That makes me not having a pair better.

Before long someone will make an awesome cosplay step-by-step video so people can make their own, and probably at a cheaper price.
