Bane

In comics, the man who broke The Bat. In other media, not so much.

Origin

In Batman & Robin, Bane is Antonio Diego, a serial killer who is experimented on with Venom, a form of steroid. He becomes a mindless brute serving as Poison Ivy's lackey. This is in stark contrast to the comics version. This version of Bane is a man raised from birth in prison due to the laws of the fictional land of Santa Prisca punishing him for his father's crimes as his father had escaped the law. After growing up he establishes himself as the ruler of the prison yard, only to be chosen for experiments with the super-steroid Venom. After escaping prison he heads for Gotham City and succeeds with his plan to take out Batman and take over the Gotham underworld.

Creation

Bane was created in the comics by Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan, first appearing in Batman: Vengeance of Bane. His first motion picture appearance was in Batman & Robin, written by Akiva Goldsman and directed by Joel Schumacher

Character Evolution

Bane's comic book iteration has gone from the man who created the most successful strategy yet to defeat Batman, leading to Batman's paralysis at the hands(and knee) of Bane to an anti-hero, clean of Venom but still very strong, with a seemingly-reduced grasp of the English language in the pages of Gail Simone's Secret Six series, where he has taken on a bigger brother role to team leader Scandal Savage.

In video media, he is often an one-dimensional character. In cartoons he is often shown as a hired goon who is easily defeated once his access to Venom is removed. In Batman & Robin he appears completely incapable of speech and once the delivery tube for his Venom is disconnected he immediately reverts to a much smaller build and is easily defeated by Robin and Batgirl

Bane has been announced as a character in The Dark Knight Rises, played by Tom Hardy. There is at this time no further information about the character.

Non-Speaking Animated Appearances

In Batman Beyond, Bane is a character. However, it is not a speaking part and thus no actor played him. Currently, it will not appear in the character filmography.
