Box Office Expectations

Battleship to me is something of a mystery when it comes to its box office expectations, because on the one hand everyone I've spoken with talks about how they can't believe they're actually making this movie and even on Rotten Tomatoes the viewers are saying they don't want to see it. Yet at the same time its by the guys who make Transformers and that always brings in tons of cash.

So what are your expectations on this? How much do you think it will make this weekend? Will it be a hit or a bomb? Can it beat the Avengers this weekend and take the number one spot?

It won't make 200 million on the opening weekend like The Avengers, but it will definitely make over 100 million. Most of it will probably be on morbid curiosity. Sad to say, but it will beat the Avengers.

@Acura_Max: It won't make anything near that much. It's midnight showing was only $420K, less than Dark Shadows, and it's projected to have a $35 to $40 million opening with The Avengers still number one.

@RockinKemosabe: That is certainly good to hear. Suddenly my faith in people has been restored.

@Acura_Max: Yeah. I'm glad too. But I guess this isn't Taylor Kitsch's year, he's mostly been box office poison with Battleship and John Carter. Does that mean Savages is going to bomb? It is opening up against The Amazing Spider-Man after all.

I want this movie to bomb soooo badly. They can probably market themselves to 50 million here. There is a certain amount of cynicism I have for summer movies and the tastes of the public, but just this once I hope they can all see that this movie looks really really stupid and they just go on a Transformers bender. Unfortunately its already made a fair amount of money over seas.

Considering Dark Shadows got about $30 million with plenty of marketing I'm going to go with $48 million for Battleship.

Avengers stays on top though.

I think it might be close to matching the Avengers this weekend, I think both of them are going to come in around 50 million this weekend. However I can guarantee you this, if Battleship comes in first this week and Avengers is second, then next week Avengers will still be number 2 and Battleship will probably be in fourth.

Here in the UK, people only saw Battleship because The Avengers wasn't out yet. I highly doubt Americans will see this with The Avengers and The Dictator doing the rounds.

I'm guessing 3rd with $52 million.

I was watching Batman: TAS on The Hub and every other commercial was for Battleship. Way to hide you are owned by Hasbo.  I like Peter Berg as a director but this movie looks like a rental at best.   I did read an early review that was mostly positive so I am kinda intrigued.

The tracking for the film is around $38-40 million, won't be surprised if it hits that number. It's getting poor reviews but that won't hurt a film like this, at least not in its opening weekend. The only thing is that Avengers is still strong and directly competing with Battleship for viewers. If Avengers wasn't as big a hit and was due to make $40 million this weekend, Battleship could've easily hit $55+ million without much hassle. But Avengers is on track to make $60 million in this three-day, so that'll hurt Battleship. Gonna say it makes what Cowboys & Aliens did last year, $36 million for the three-day, will have Memorial Day next week to soften the blow a bit, but not sure it'll cross $100 million domestic. (It should make $300 million worldwide, however.)

It's already become a hit overseas, but it's going up against The Avengers, which probably won't help it's chances this weekend. I predict somewhere around 30-50 million domestically.

I was contemplating seeing it in D-Box but the theatre was still showing The Avengers in that format so I said (not out loud) "well then, fuck you Battleship" and left.

This thread is just reminding me of how much I miss the Box Office Winners League.

If I started one up each week for the new films coming out, would any of you be interested in participating, just out of curiosity?

Post by obscurefan (450 posts) See mini bio

@jackanderson: Heck yes I'd be interested in participating, I was just thinking about doing that myself.

Battleship made $9.5 on Friday, projections are putting it even below $30 million unless there is a big bump on Saturday and Sunday.

@jackanderson: That'd be awesome. I would probably lose every time but it would be fun anyway.

@jackanderson: Yes that would be a great idea

Breaking News!

Battleship is expected to make only a measly 25,300,000 this weekend, which is less than anybody expected while the Avengers is going to make 55 million this weekend. There is still hope for the movie going audiences out there.

@obscurefan:

I went onto Yahoo Movies a few minutes ago, and it's confirmed. Battleship only made 25 million this weekend. That's a little less than I anticipated. Regardless, it still looks like it's a hit worldwide, because it's made over $200 million. It's just a box-office bomb domestically.

Trailer 2: Battleship

Alexander Skarsgard's facial expression more or less mirrors my own in regards to this latest Battleship trailer. Remind me again how this is not an elaborate Michael Bay parody?

Trailer: Battleship

I hate judging movies based on trailers, but...this is 100% guaranteed to be the dumbest movie of all time. OF ALL TIME.
