World Collectively Sighs: Budgetary Concerns Almost Killed Battleship Movie in June

The producers of Battleship better hope the film does well lest they be crying "Sorry!" all the way to Candyland jail. Yahtzee.

Do we talk about the Battleship movie too much here on Screened? Perhaps so, but let's be honest: this is the train wreck on water we're all dying to see come to fruition. Production's getting started this month in Hawaii and THR is reporting that Universal execs are nervous about the project in a big way. A $200 million dollar way.

That's the budget for this film.

If you need to hyperventilate into a paper bag I'll understand, I've got one for my now-thrice hourly attacks thanks to this news. For comparison's sake, Avatar was around $237 million. With a price tag like that attached the company heads are feeling a bit antsy since there are no real headlining stars attached besides Rhianna, but this being her debut as an actress it's impossible to say how well she'll perform. There's also the impending sale of NBC Universal to Comcast and another project with a bloated budget might not look terribly attractive on the balance sheets. An executive decision was almost made in June to ax it, but something made them hold back. Is the film part of an elaborate, wildly expensive gamble between billionaire entertainment CEOs to see how much it grosses? I can not wait to see where the dice rest on this one.

I would rather watch a pile of 200 million  single dollar bills be set on fire.  At least that would be something unique and memorable.

I wish I could be in the room when NBC and Universal's CEOs hear the first weekend gross of $12 to this eventual, sinking turd.

Don't worry Lopez, there's no need for this film to have headlining stars: that $200 million is just going on 2 hours worth of special effects, with ten minutes spared for Rihanna to sing/dance/attempt and fail to act.

I hope this movie is half as bloated and weird looking as 2012.

I hope there's a character named Milton Bradley. I'd actually go the movie if they did that. The entire three hours and 15 minutes of the movie, I'd be shaking my head saying "They actually named a character Milton Bradley".

When the people who OK'ed this budget die, I hope that all the little African children they could've saved with that money but didn't are there to greet them in the afterlife and give them wet willies forever. Eternal. Wet. Willies.

Hey, studio, I've got a board game-based movie for you: Connect Fuck You.

I hope it does well.  I don't want anything to get in the way of my 200 million dollar planned Connect Four movie...in 4D (the 4th "D" is for dynamite-driven!)

They'll make that after they've secured the box office for Connect Four.
Trailer 2: Battleship

Alexander Skarsgard's facial expression more or less mirrors my own in regards to this latest Battleship trailer. Remind me again how this is not an elaborate Michael Bay parody?

Trailer: Battleship

I hate judging movies based on trailers, but...this is 100% guaranteed to be the dumbest movie of all time. OF ALL TIME.
