Behind The Scenes On The Hobbit: Middle-Earth In 3D

Peter Jackson lovingly fondles around three million dollars in cameras in this look at the ongoing filming. But some of them are named for dogs, so I can't blame him.

So much effort for an effect that very few people care for...

PJ might actually restore my faith in 3D.

This may actually be the one and only movie I ever see in 3D. If Peter Jackson can't make it work, I don't know who can.

I don't like 3D at all, but if there were any director I'd want to explain it all to me, it would be Peter Jackson.

I'll still check this out in 2D, but golly gosh colour me excited.

Did he put on a bunch of weight again?

It's like he has to be a hobbit when he's working on the series.

Moviemaniacon Nov. 7, 2011 at 12:53 p.m.

Looks interesting to say the least.

@zFUBARz: To be fair, that weight loss was like seven or eight years ago. He's getting older and you know how keeping weight off gets harder the older you get.

48 frames a second, pfft... Douglas Trumbull has been working in 60fps since the 1980's. Okay, you didn't see Brainstorm his Showscan format because of balking by theater owners over the cost of installing new projectors (and for years it's only been in special theaters in Vegas and theme parks) - but now that digital projectors are out there (and many can do more than just 24fps), that hurdle is removed...

I've never understood the hate towards 3D. I understand not liking bad 3D and not liking some of the side effects of it (dimmer picture, lower resolution). But honesty how can it not be seen as the future of our displays, it doesn't make sense to do away with it just because it isn't up to snuff just yet. Look at the 3DS, they have had glasses-free 3D before it but the fact that it's even starting to even make it's way into handheld gaming devices and phones is crazy and it's only going to get better. It just takes time.

I don't think everything needs to be in 3D and I don't think it makes a bad movie good or a good movie any better necessarily but it definitely has it's place and in certain instances can look pretty cool. When 3D tech is really perfected and all the current issues we're struggling with have gone by the way side I don't think it will even cross our minds.
