The Hunger Games return with such a sequel twist that you can't believe writer Suzanne Collins didn't think of film when writing. Catching Fire builds up with all types of subversive messaging which is interesting but also brings into relief the limitations of the genre and film.
Bella Swan is the protagonist in the Twilight series and the object of affection for both Edward Cullen and Jacob Black.
Isabella Swan, preferring to be called Bella, decides to live with her father in a small Washington town called Forks. This decision comes in the place of moving with her mother and stepfather to Florida for her stepfathers spring training. Instead, she takes the time to get to know her father better, whom she has not spent much time with over the past three years. After her parents divorce, she spent the summers with her father, but in recent years the time with him has become sparse at best.
After moving to Forks, Washington, Bella is introduced to the mysterious Edward Cullen. Portrayed herself as a quiet person, she keeps to herself for the majority of the time and is troubled with some insecurities. That is, until she becomes intrigued with the group of vampires living near her, and most notably Edward. Through the series of Twilight novels and movies, she learns about the mysterious past of Edward and the group of vampires that he is associated with. Ultimately, she falls deeply in love with him, but even this love is challenged several times.
Her desire to become closer to him culminates in her continuing wish to become a vampire herself. Edward wants to protect her from the realities of his world and is hesitant to turn her into one of his kind. This theme runs throughout the course of the story arc, and becomes a major obstacle to overcome in their love for one another and their eventual marriage. Ultimately, she is made into a vampire after nearly dying during childbirth with their child Renesmee.
Bella confronts Edward with the truth about him
In the movie Twilight, Bella is introduced to a new town and falls in love with the mysterious Edward. Bella figures out Edward's deep and dark secret and decides that she still wants to be with him. Edward is a vampire and has lived as a 17 year old "for a awhile." Bella also meets the rest of the Cullen family who are thrilled that Edward finally met the girl he wants to be with. Bella also learns that the Cullen family are not typical vampires as they are vegetarian and only eat animals. There are some vampires who also possess other abilities. Edward has the ability to read minds, Alice has visions of the future, and Jasper can detect and affect the mood of the people.
Bella being attacked by James
However most of the other vampires are not as safe around humans as the Cullen's. Bella becomes the target of James who has a keen ability to track various prey. It is here where Bella decides that in order for her to save Edward's life she willingly confronts James in hopes that he will not hurt Edward. James however decided that Bella was too easy to hunt and then tells her that Edward's reaction to her death will cause Edward to seek vengeance and he is invigorated by that possibility.
After the battle Bella becomes gravely wounded. While being bitten by James, Alice informs everyone that Bella will eventually become a vampire whether it's now or in the future. Edward decides that he doesn't want that and sucks out the poison, and almost kills Bella in the process. Edward explains to Bella that he wants her to live a normal human life that he was unable to. Bella though has decided that she wants to be with him forever and become a vampire.
In New Moon, Bella and Edward are still together when it's Bella's 18th birthday. While Bella is opening gifts, she gets a paper cut. Most of the Cullen's have learned to control themselves around blood, but for Jasper that urge is still too strong. Edward sensed Jasper's outbreak, and lunged at his brothers attack. During that motion Bella is thrown against the wall into a glass cabinet. Where her tiny paper cut turned into a long gash on her arm.
After that incident, Edward decides that Bella's life is too important for him to risk anything happening. So he and his family decide to leave Forks, which Bella refuses and escapes into herself. She can't seem to live without Edward and Charlie doesn't know how to help her.
Bella and Jacob
Soon though Bella finds that if she puts herself in dangerous situations then Edward manifests to her and warns her. She then finds some old motorcycles on the side of a road and takes them to Jacob Black to have him repair them. Jacob was introduced to us in the first movie as the son of Charlie's friend Billy. When Bella used to visit during the summer when she was younger she used to hang out with Jacob's sister, and he was also there. Jacob is three years younger than Bella, and is also a mechanic. Bella it seems starts to feel better about Edward's departure, but still wants to ride the motorcycles because she feels that she'll be able to see that manifestation again.
Bella soon discovers though that Jacob maybe has a secret of his own. He has fallen in love with her and tells her that she should give up trying to see Edward again. After awhile Jacob becomes distant to Bella and she wants to find a way that they can still be friends. During Jacob's time away, something has changed within him. Bella senses that he has a secret that he is unwilling to tell. He gives her hints that might be able to help her, because he is sworn to secrecy not to tell. She remembers an old tale that he once told her that helped her find out what Edward was, but failed to remember until now that Jacob's tribe was descendants of wolves. Jacob has grown to maturity and with it has become a shifter sworn to protect the tribe from vampires, their mortal enemies.
Bella and Alice
During Jacob's time away though Bella went cliff diving in an effort to see Edward. Jacob rescued her from the sea, but later that night Jacob took her home. Alice was there at the house looking for answers on what happened to Bella. She had a vision of Bella jumping of the cliff, but not resurfacing. After the short reunion though she tells Bella why she came. It turns out that told Edward what she saw, and he has decided to visit the Volturi. The Volturi are an old group of vampires that are sort of the vampire police. They pride themselves as the force to which keep the existence of vampires a secret. Carlisle once lived with the Volturi and is still friends with them. Edward has gone to them to be killed, for he cannot live without Bella.
