Ron Howard's best film.

Good pick, although I'd have rather seen Sunshine for a space choice.

Sunshine needs a Half Good, not a Besties.

There's something half bad with Sunshine? That film is flawless (not to mention scientifically sound).

Scientifically sound, sure. Flawless? Not even.

To be fair, I'm unashamedly biased as I adore that film.

Great film, appreciate it because unlike a lot of similar films, it's not in love with itself.

I'm no scientist, but even I know the science in Sunshine is bollocks.

  1. The Sun is estimated to die in 5 billion years but at that point it will already be a red giant and will span out to the asteroid belt. The Earth would of been scorched and engulfed by the Sun millions of years before then. Now on the commentary track Brian Cox says that there is a Q-Ball inside the sun that stops it from expanding, but even then as a star dies it burns off hotter and uses up more energy. The Earth wouldn't be suffering a heat death it would be scorched.
  2. As for the idea of dropping a payload into the Sun it takes a page from The Core in the stupid scientific plan book. Film makers and Writers need to get this idea of nuke it and it will get better out of their heads. The sun is one giant nuclear reaction and any bomb that humans could make would be like a drop of water in an ocean. Now even if the payload is a Fusion device it wouldn't do much as Fusion mostly only occurs at the end of a stars life when it goes Supernova. Yes it does produce heat but it would be so much heat that the Earth would be scorched.

As for the film it devolves into a Slasher in space. By having the threat be an external (be it human) threat it cheapens the true "villain" of the film, The Sun. Take Mission to Mars for example. It is by no means a good film but in that the hardships that the crew faces are because of three things, Human failure, Technological failure and the harsh environment. Sunrise has glimpses of that in the first half but it then throws that away for the crazed god fearing captain of the first ship. The worse thing about this devolution is that it isn't even one of the main crew that goes insane. Yes, Trey is pushed as the villain but that amounts to nothing and instead makes us dislike the main crew when most of them want to kill him instead of sedating him again and locking him up better this time.
