Besties: Ronin

Back before he was meeting the Fockers, De Niro was starring in Bestie Award winning action-heist films, like Ronin.

Interesting about Mamet writing under a pseudonym.
Beomooseon June 7, 2011 at 2:30 p.m.

Did Rorie just tell me to watch this video at the end of this video?

AlwaysBeClothingon June 7, 2011 at 2:51 p.m.

So Rorie,

To give an amazing recommendation! Hopefully its on Netflix streaming.

Good choice for Besties. You say it's not as eruptive as some other Mamet movies, which I took to mean Glengarry Glen Ross, but I still think Ronin is the only film to approach GGR for having the best ensemble cast of complete assholes.

A (hopefully not too snarky-sounding) question: When you cover objectively great movies like this, is that easier or harder than covering films for Half-Good or Defending Your Movie? With the latter two, I feel you have more to say about the movies (generally both why it's good and why it's bad), but that it probably takes more work putting the video together as a result.

I like Besties though, so don't misunderstand. Out of everything on the site (besides maybe Tom Pinchuk's "Welcome to Weird" series), it's the best source for movie recommendations.

Gotta agree, that really is one of the greatest car chases I've ever seen too.
heatDrive88on June 7, 2011 at 3:20 p.m.

Fuck I love this movie so much, just watching it like this makes me want to watch it again and again... and AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Ronin is a great film. It was a real surprise for me upon first viewing. I will say though while everyones acting is pretty good the Irish accents range from fairly accurate and fine to comically over the top depending on the scene and what they are saying. They did an alright job though.

Best part of Ronin is the casting. Robert De Niro has a history of Goodfellas, HEAT, The Godfather Part 2 and Casiono. When you see him in Ronin as a veteran man-for-hire, there's no doubt in your mind that he is. Same with every other cast member, it's very well done. Also just seeing DeNiro think his way through heist situations is fascinating, my favorite is how he manages to take pictures of the guys holding the box by pretending to be a tourist.

Also the unconventional ending was an added bonus as well. Great movie, only saw it recently. I missed the first five minutes but the rest of the film was so spellbinding I had to keep watch. "DRAW IT AGAIN."

Such a good movie

Ronin along with the Score are some of De Niro's last really really good movies before he was tainted with the Focker virus.

RONIN is bad-ass. Frankenheimer's direction is so sharp. Although the shocking battle of 'oirish' accents between McElhone and Jonathan Pryce is kind of painful.

I actually read the original script and it was far more generic and unfocused. Mamet's rewrite tightened it up, threw out some unnecessary subplots and, of course, brought his awesome dialogue to it.

Great movie.

Man, I love Ronin. Fantastic action and cast. Good choice, Rorie.

Never have seen it, but if it's on the level of the first Mission Impossible, I am in. Jean Reno is in both. Love him in MI

I have tried to watch this movie three times and have not stayed awake yet. But I do tell people I like this movie and the car chases are the best to show how cool I am. But seriously this movie is ass fucking boring.

The wiki page for this movie is probably my best contribution to the site, if I do say so myself.

LiKon June 7, 2011 at 7:24 p.m.

HELL YEA, two epic car chase scenes and suspense. Great flick.
