Like a red shirt in Star Trek, in any action, slasher or general horror film starring a white actor, if a character's complexion is a shade on the dark side it's almost assured they'll die within the first act or, if they survive, guaranteed in the second act.
On a side note, this is 99% guaranteed, for some reason, if the black guy in question is Ernie Hudson. He has a truly unfortunate track record outside of comedies starring Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.
