Black Hawk Down is an Action/war drama from Director Ridley Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer based on the best-selling book detailing a gripping true story about a mission in Somalia on October 3, 1993. On this date an elite group of American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers are sent to Somalia on a critical mission to capture a violent warlord whose corrupt regime has lead to the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis. When the mission goes terribly wrong, the men find themselves outnumbered and literally fighting for their lives.
Making the Black Hawk Down film was originally the idea of director Simon West who ended up directing Lara Croft: Tomb Raider instead, but planted the seed by suggested to Jerry Bruckheimer that he should buy the film rights to the book by Mark Bowden; Black Hawk Down: a Story of Modern War.
Black hawk Down is set in the events after Years of warfare among rival clans in Somalia, east africa has lead to over 300,00 civilians to die of starvation. In 1992 Mohamed Farrah Aidid, the most powerful of warlords, rules the capital Mogadishu and Seizes international food shipments at the ports, the world responds behind a force of 20,000 U.S. Marines, food is delivered and order is restored.
In April 1993 Aidid waited until the Marines withdraw, and then declares war on the remaining U.N. peace-keepers. And in June, he ambushed and slaughter 24 Pakistani soldiers and began American Personnel. In late August, America's elite soldiers, Delta Force, Army Rangers and the 160th SOAR are sent to Mogadishu to remove Aidid and restore order.
The film follows a group of Delta Force soldiers, Army Rangers, and Special Operations Aviation Regiment that organize a raid in an attempt to capture two of Mohammed Farah Aidid's top men in the Bakaara Market neighborhood of Mogadishu. Shortly after a Successful extraction by the Delta team, two Black Hawk Helicopter are shot down by the Somali militia, using RPGs, and what was supposed to be a in and out type of mission, turns into a long and desperate rescue operation.
The film jumps between a number of different soldiers, including both pilots Cliff Wolcott and Mike Durant of the fallen helicopters, two 2 machine gunners who were left behind, a recently promoted Staff Sergeant Matt Eversmann and the convoy of troops that needs to extract all of the different groups that a spread thought the hostel city.
