Unicorns are capable of magic, but what they can do is limited to their special traits. But Twilight Sparkle isn't like other unicorns; her talent is magic, so she is able to pull off a wider variety of spells, having at least 25 in her repertoire. While she is embarrassed to indulge in this fact, Spike is nothing  than willing to brag that her friend may be the most magic-savvy unicorn is all of Equestria.

 Oh fun, pony bondage.

But while in town, the two run into two other unicorns (seriously), Snips and Snails, who are on their way to watch a performance by the traveling magician, The Great and Powerful Trixie. Trixie, another unicorn, brags about being able to perform great feats unseen in Equestria, but her boasting draws the disgust of the townsfolk, including Twilight's friends. Trixie challenges the townsfolk to try and match her, claiming that whatever they can do, she can do better. Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and Rarity all match up against the unicorn, but Trixie manages to one up and humiliate them in front of the audience. Spike urges Twilight to stand up for her friends and knock Trixie of her high horse (No pun intended; this show has enough of them) but Twilight is reluctant to use her superior magic. After seeing the town's negative reaction to Trixie's boasting, Twilight feels that taking on Trixie would also cause her to be viewed as a boisterous showoff. With no more willing competitors, Trixie remains unchallenged as the most magically-capable unicorn in the land.

I'm convinced that those two are proof of inbreeding in Equestria.

Spike, however, believes in Twilight. He tries to convince her that going up against Trixie would not cause her to be viewed negatively. But Twilight is convinced that doing so would risk her friendship with the girls and, no matter the scenario, showing off is still showing off. He also tries to convince Snips and Snails that Trixie is nothing but talk, and there is no way that she or the two ponies can prove otherwise. But the two dimwitted ponies have an idea to show them once and for all. Trixie's biggest brag was that she was able to single-handily take on an Ursa Major: a ferocious bear-like creature. So to prove that she's best, they head into the Everfree Forest to lure one out.

 Fool proof.

After waking it up, they run back into town to alert Trixie. Instead, the magician cowers and runs for her life. But to save face, she tries to use her magic to fend off the creature. As it turns out, her magic is only limited to basic spells; proving that her show was, literally, all smoke and mirrors. These spells only succeed in making the beast more angry. Meanwhile, Spike had gone back to the library to get Twilight. The both of them arrive on the scene just as Trixie admits to the boys that she had made up the whole story to better her image. So as the creature rips apart the town, it's now up to Twilight to vanquish the creature.

Using her magic, Twilight calms the beast with music and warm milk poured into a re-purposed water tower; gently levitating it back into the forest. The townsfolk are awestruck by Twilight's magic, which they never knew was that incredible. Twilight begs that they don't look down on her, but they assure her that the only reason they despised Trixie was because she was unbearably immodest. To them, they are just prouder than ever to have such talent as a friend. As for the creature, it turns out it was a baby Ursa Major, an Ursa Minor, and it was just cranky that is was woken up. Twilight had easily 'vanquished' the creature because she spent the afternoon studying the subject, after hearing Trixie's claims.

"MACGREGOR!!!"
"MACGREGOR!!!"
Trixie, however, doesn't learn her lesson. She continues to brag as she trots off into the the night. Snips and Snails, though, are given the punishment of cleaning up the Ursa Minor's mess and, because she can, Twilight gives them magic spell 25: fully grown mustaches. That morning, Twilight writes about her lesson to Princess Celestia. She learned that one should be proud of their talents, and know the appropriate time to use them.
