Brave (2012)

4 star rating THE Screened Review by Matthew Marko

A charming if anachronistic fairy tale, Brave manages to be a good step towards post-Cars recovery for Pixar. But it’s purportedly fresh feminist heroine manages to feel like retread of many of the ideas we’ve seen plenty of times before.

Brenda Chapman Director previously directed The Prince of Egypt
Mark Andrews Director previously directed One Man Band

Set in the Scotland of old, the spirited young Princess Merida struggles to break free from her increasingly constricting duties as a daughter of royalty, and becomes determined to take her fate into her own hands.

A major subplot is the same, and the line "Sorry. I don't speak bear," is used in the same context.

Production

Brave had a troubled production history. Brenda Chapman (Prince of Egypt) was originally the director and spent over a year working on the project. However it was moving to slowly and eventually she was replaced by Mark Andrews (she stayed on a "co-director.") Among the changes Andrews brought were to make the setting take place in the summer. Chapman's vision featured a snowy winter-wonderland type setting where each snow-flake was a Scottish hieroglyph, but that had taken far to long to develop.

Trailer 3: Brave

This extended clip from Brave shows that girls can both be princesses AND perform physical activities well! I never would've guessed!

Trailer 2: Brave

Whale Rider meets Braveheart in this curious-looking next film from Pixar. Oh, and kilt jokes.

Teaser Trailer: Brave

A short glimpse of Pixar's Summer 2012 Scottish-themed film. They probably had to fight Mike Myers off with a stick while making this.
