The King of France sends Chevalier de Fronsac, royal taxidermist and knight, to investigate the mysterious killings in the French province of Gévaudan by a mysterious monster.

Trivia:

There are actual historical records of a Beast of Gévaudan which was a wolf-like creature that prowled the Auvergne and South Dordogne regions of France during the years 1764 to 1767. It killed about 100 people.
