I don’t know if I’m pleased or dismayed that a whole audience (maybe even a whole generation of viewers?) knows Bruce Campbell as one of the dudes on Burn Notice and not as Ash. Either way, seeing the great "Final Shemp" getting his first mainstream starring role in far too many years makes me happy.
Deadline says that USA’s moving ahead with a solo movie about his character, Sam Axe. Bucking conventional thinking, they won't title it the Axe Effect. It’ll be about the dude’s last days as a Navy SEAL in the bygone, halcyon days of ’05. Needless to say, there are going to be plenty of horrifying revelations, soul-searching changes of heart and maybe just a little gun play.
The flick’s shooting in Columbia in January for a premiere in the spring and, crazily enough, Jeffrey Donovan’s directing it. Yeah, the star of Burn Notice. Apparently he did pretty well directing an episode of the show over the summer and, now, he's movin' on up.
USA’s president of original programming's explained that everybody got the idea to do this after they saw that “Bruce Campbell [is] the Bruce Springstreen of Comic Con" and I suppose I can't think of an apter descriptor for the guy. Can you? Go Bruce!
