Caddyshack follows Danny Noonan and his desire to win the caddy tournament so that he can get a scholarship.  He regularly caddies for the club's playboy and son of the co-founder of Bushwood Estates, Ty Webb.   Danny gets the opportunity to caddy for Judge Smails to try and impress him so that he can get the Caddy Scholarship.  While Smails is playing he is made fun of by Al Czervik and he bets Smails a thousand dollars that he will miss a short putt.  When Smails misses the putt he throws his putter hitting a woman having lunch.  When the husband gets angry Danny takes blame for it by saying it was his fault for not examining the grip on the club closer.  Of course this does impress Smails and tells Danny that he should apply for the scholarship.  Danny does win the caddy tournament

which pretty much ensures him that he will win the scholarship. Then Czervik destroys the Judge's new yacht when Czervik's much larger boat drops it's anchor on top of Smails sinking his new boat.  That causes Smails to come home early where he catches Danny sleeping with his niece Lacy Underall in his house.   Smails still offers him the scholarship on the condition that he doesn't mention the incident with his niece ever.

Czervik challenges Smails to a high stakes golf match for $20,000 to play where Czervik teams up with Webb and Smails teams up with The Bishop.  However Czervik's chances are severely hurt when Ty slams his hand in the door on the day of the competition.  When Czervik realizes that he is loosing and is in trouble he "hurts" his arm and asks for a substitution.  Smails suggests his son Spaulding but Ty points out it should be his team's decision on the replacement and they want Danny to take Czervik's place.  When the judge suggests that maybe somebody doesn't want the caddy scholarship, Danny replies that he guesses he doesn't.

Throughout the movie the grounds-keeper, Carl Spackler, is challenged to kill the gophers on the course.  He tries a lot of  things  including stalking the gophers, drowning the gophers, and his last plan to blow up the gophers by making explosives that look like varmints to entice the gopher to get close to them.  He makes a lot of them and places them in the holes.

At the same moment that Carl is about to blow up the explosives Danny is lining up the putt that decides who wins the bet.  When he putts all of the explosions go off.  The ball gets stuck on the side of the hole and while the official is watching the ball one big final explosion goes off jarring the ball into the hole winning the match for Czervik, Danny, and Ty.
