The Hunger Games return with such a sequel twist that you can't believe writer Suzanne Collins didn't think of film when writing. Catching Fire builds up with all types of subversive messaging which is interesting but also brings into relief the limitations of the genre and film.
Taking several liberties with the original property, the film was intended for theatrical release, but was shelved in favor of a direct-to-video release. The film is notable for asking viewers to support the 1990 Environmental Protection Act, which relates the the film's environmental message.
The film did not get a US theatrical release but was released internationally.
