Ash saves his Metapod from a swarm of angry Beedrill.

As Ash and Misty continue their trek through Viridian Forest, Ash stumbles upon a wild Weedle. He attempts to catch the wild Pokémon, but is interrupted by an unknown trainer dressed as a samurai. The samurai challenges Ash to a Pokémon battle, and the wild Weedle uses this interruption to escape, much to Ash's dismay.

The two trainers begin their battle, which initially goes rather poorly for Ash, who is forced to withdraw his Pidgeotto. Ash redeems himself, however, as he uses his Metapod's harden attack to crush the samurai's Pinsir. The samurai is forced to call upon his second Pokémon; which also happens to be a Metapod (a cocoon-like  Pokémon). The two trainers find themselves urging the two motionless Pokémon to attack each other, as Misty laments the tedium of the battle.

Breaking the monotony, a swarm of angry Beedrill begin to flock towards the the two battling trainers, having been alerted by the escaped Weedle from the beginning of the episode. The trainers manage to escape unscathed, but Ash's Metapod is kidnapped by the Beedrill. The samurai criticizes Ash for not going after his missing Metapod, and claims that Ash is nowhere near as good a trainer as the others from Pallet Town that have passed through Viridian Forest.

Upset and angry, Ash sneaks out from camp at the dead of night to pursue his missing Metapod. He finds his Metapod placed against a tree filled with sleeping Beedrill. Just as he is about to reclaim his missing Pokémon, Team Rocket appears to once again try and steal Ash's Pikachu, but only manage to succeed in waking up the swarm of Beedrill. Ash manages to dodge the attacking swarm, leaving Team Rocket to deal with the angry Pokémon.

As Ash meets up with his Metapod, the samurai and Misty reappear on the scene to warn Ash that the Beedrill are coming back their way. Metapod chooses this moment to evolve into the butterfly Pokémon Butterfree, and saves the day by using a sleep attack on the Beedrill swarm. The samurai apologizes to Ash by saying that Ash has a tremendous amount of skill with his Pokémon, and says he would be honored to fight Ash again someday. Together, Ash and Misty leave the Viridian Forest and continue on their path to Pewter City.
