I Have A Theory on the Nolan Snub

I was thinking about the Best Director category and who Nolan would replace if he was nominated. Then it struck me:

All of the director's have at least one actor/actress nominated for their films (Portman for Black Swan, Eisenberg for the Social Network, ect..). Nolan has none. More importantly, that's the one category where Inception honestly deserved to be excluded from. No one was bad, but no one was stand out amazing like James Franco or Colin Firth. The main attraction for Inception is the complexity of the story and the visuals.

I'm not saying this snub was legitimate, I'm just saying this is probably why it happened.

Do you agree/disagree?

Very interesting thoughts about the Actor-Director connection, and I totally agree.

I think most people overlook that traditionally a Director's primary responsibility is to get the perfect performance from their actors.  So even when it's clear that Inception was really a work that was Nolan (if that makes sense), if none of the performances stick out, it sort of makes sense that the Best Director nod goes to other folks.

@Pickle:  It's a fresh take on the snub and I think an interesting one. I still feel Nolan should probably be given at the least a nomination because I thought Inception would not have been a good film if handled by a lesser director.

The performance of an actor or ensemble does say a lot about the direction, so I think you may be on to something. Good theory.

That's true, but the thing is, all of the acting in Inception WAS great. Not Oscar worthy, but still extremely good, and the directing in Inception is such a sum of its parts, what with story, cinematography, characters and everything coming into play and working off of each other.

Good point. However Peter Jackson was not only nominated but won for Return of the King and that didn't have any actor nods.

I'm sure it's probably happened more and i guess it all depends on the structure of the films themselves.

I liked Natalie Portman, but nothing she did in that movie felt like Oscar material.

No, they just think that Tom Hooper is the shit, and Nolan isn't.

@Pickle: i totally agree with you.  thats probably why.
i also want to share my personal belief that inception is overrated and maybe nolan didnt deserve it as much as the others.
