How has it not been said yet, .... this is a very slow starting movie and drags a lot in the second act. They only develop one character and you become completely indifferent to him by the end of the movie. Very neat concept and well executed but completely stupid plot and impossible to get emotionally invested in = could not care about the end.

People in my screening were calling the shots the WHOLE TIME, utterly predictable.

What I really loved about this movie, was how open ended a lot of the plot was. "Should we see why police and military copters are surrounding the stone we can feel is still there? Nah." And I would have figured one of the characters sticking around that area in the end, but just flew off. Really hope they keep up the pace with the next movie, and with explaining less about whats going on.

Saw this movie. I actually had a similar idea for a movie for awhile, though I'm not a filmmaker and have no aspirations for being a filmmaker but even still I'm slightly miffed they made the movie in my head :) Actually the way I had it going was the anti-social guy would have aspirations to ruling the world, not remaining angry like in this movie. But it was a cool movie overall, it was an interesting dynamic between the main dude and his cooler "friends". It was definitely the right way to do the movie but I think having them all have this symbiotic relationship didn't really work, just forced some situations that maybe could've come about a different way. The special effects were decent, wasn't nearly as awesome as Cloverfield though, and all the different cameras was kinda jarring and didn't really work. I was surprised how they went about the movie, I'm not sure if it was great, I thought the cousin came across as a bit false, a bit too much a ying to the angry dude's yang. I'd probably give it 4 stars too though.

eh I wasn't a complete fan I thought it was a little too broody, the effects weren't that good, and it didn't need to be a found footage film

This was a fantastic movie. I was psyched for it and hearing that it was really good made me go out and see it as soon as I'd heard that.

They really nailed the "abused, depressed loner" character better than any movie I have ever seen. It was really shocking just how well portrayed he was, but stupid people with no real grasp of psychological trauma, and what it can do to a person, complain about him being "the emo kid".

Watching him bounce back initially from his shitty lot in life and start to socialize a bit, and then having that "unfortunate" moment at the party and that single incident causing all of his newfound confidence to simply crumble to nothing and indeed send him further deeper once he realized that having superpowers didn't automatically mean his life wasn't still shitty with a drunk, abusive father and brink-of-death mother(which I can tell you, is one of the most traumatizing things a person can possibly experience, and can really castrate any sort of confidence a person can have, and can make you feel utterly helpless, like you cannot truly do anything at all).

It really does an excellent job of gray area-ing the character, at the heart of it. His lot in life is unfortunate, he has suffered untold amounts of abuse, and ultimately at a certain point his anger and depression smashes aside his attempts to fix his broken life, has a psychotic break, and starts to justify his rage and feelings of helplessness using his powers and ultimately goes full-on rampage mode, wanting to be left alone and simultaneously wanting to be helped.

He is not a good person, in the end. He's done unforgivable, abominable things and caused a lot of suffering, damage, and death. But the movie does a damn good job of making sure you understand EXACTLY what happened to bring him to that point, and also why he needed to be stopped.

This was an incredible movie. There's little gripes I had with special effects but fuck it, the movie was good even without blockbuster explosions.
