Plot

Chuck vs. the Helicopter opens with Casey in hot pursuit of a young shoplifter, who had stolen a video game from the Buy More. Eager to prevent the situation from escalating out of hand, Chuck quickly chases up after him, preventing Casey from physically beating the thief.

Clearly relieved to have separated the two, Chuck begins to return to the store, only to see Sarah across the street, working at the local Wienerlicious. While clearing out yet another batch of burnt wieners, Sarah explains that the restaurant is ideal for surveillance, and could be crucial for his protection. Chuck, clearly surprised by the whole situation, demands to know more about the CIA’s plans for him. Sarah calmly reassures him that they’ve got everything under control and offers to reveal more over a date - which, clearly surprised by her directness, he accepts.

At intelligence HQ, Beckman and Graham meet to discuss the fact that all their counter terrorist information is stuck in a Nerd Herder’s head. Although somewhat dismayed by their predicament, they make arrangements for Sarah to bring Chuck to Dr. Zarnow, an NSA scientist, who they believe to have the ability remove the Intersect from his brain.

Later that night, Sarah picks Chuck up for the date, but things do not turn out as he expected. Instead of a romantic meal, Sarah brings him to the Buy More, and explains the plans the doctor has to fix his condition. He is left in the home theatre room, which has been re-fitted to accommodate psychological testing. Outside the room, Sarah, now joined by Casey, meets Zarnow to initiate the test. Initially, the images are random, and have no connection to the Intersect, but these quickly change to pictures that trigger flashes - revealing a plethora of intelligence. After the completion of the test, Zarnow is clearly stunned by Chuck’s retention of information, but also believes he may have a way to remove the Intersect from the brain. After the examinations, Zarnow leaves to begin working on a method of extraction from the brain. However, in the back seat of his car, a cell phone rings - which triggers an explosion, killing the doctor instantly.

The following morning, Casey and Sarah arrive at the site of the explosion, clearly uneasy with working together. Their mistrust seems to be justified, as she manages to steal what remains of the phone to take away as evidence. After a brief conversation with Beckman, Casey returns to the Buy More to warn Chuck that Sarah couldn’t be trusted. Casey attempts to make his point all too clear by threatening and intimidating him.

Chuck manages to escape out of the store to visit Sarah at the Wienerlicious - where she has gained a following of leering male teens. She quickly begins to warn him of her colleague, in a similar fashion as Casey had done. She then reveals that Zarnow had been murdered, and shows Chuck the burnt out cell phone. Still in shock, Chuck flashes, to discover the phone had been issued by the NSA - seemingly incriminating Casey.
She hastily reminds Chuck of Casey’s willingness to kill him after linking him with Bryce, and that he was capable of following through this time. She instructs him to return to the Buy More, pretending to know nothing of his actions, in the hope he might reveal more information. However, this plan fails almost immediately, as Casey suspects the two have met up and so goes to confront her at the Wienerlicious. A fist fight ensues, before the entry of customers into the restaurant results in a halt, allowing Casey to escape.

Later, Chuck is called out on an off-site PC repair job - only to find out it is an attempt on Casey’s part to try to catch him. Chuck, believing him to have gone rogue and now attempting to kill him, tries to escape by driving off, but gets cornered in. Casey then tries to turn the tables, pointing out that the cell could easily be purchased on the black market - and that he as putting all his trust in Sarah - someone he barely knew at all. His point is apparently proved correct when Casey’s car is blown up with another NSA cell phone explosive, with the pair just managing to escape. He then demands that he take Chuck into protection, to prevent Sarah from harming him. Realising she was now at home with Ellie for dinner, Chuck rushes to the car to, as he perceives, save his sister.

At home, Chuck quickly becomes paranoid of Sarah intentions, but becomes even less at ease when Casey drops by with a house warming meal. The pair briefly excuse themselves from the meal to discuss a plan of action.

While here, Casey mentions Sarah’s previous record of infiltrating groups similar to theirs, which in turn triggers a flash, revealing that she killed them all through use of poison. A panicking Chuck runs into the kitchen to prevent anyone from eating a cake Sarah prepared, convinced it is toxic. He manages to destroy the cake before anyone consumes it, but also becomes trapped in the bathroom with Sarah. While there, Sarah realises Casey wasn’t responsible for Zarnow’s death, and the three abruptly leave the dinner. Outside the house, Sarah is ambushed and kidnapped by Zarnow (who faked his death previously), who also tranquilises Casey, leaving him groggy, but still able to walk.

He and Chuck manage to locate Sarah’s whereabouts, using the trackers he hid within the quiches from the dinner. However, upon arrival, they find Morgan there, eating his way through a doggy bag of the food. Through deduction, they realise Zarnow plans to take Sarah out of the country using a chopper.  Despite Casey’s warnings, Chuck leaves the car in search of Sarah, only to run right into Zarnow himself. After declaring he knows him to be the Intersect, he then proceeds to reveal his intentions to take Chuck and sell him to the highest bidding terrorist group.

'It's just a game...' Chuck attempts to fly the chopper.

They quickly take him away to a nearby helicopter, but he manages to arm himself with a tranquiliser. Unskilled with the weapon in hand, he knocks Zarnow unconscious and accidentally shoots the pilot, sending the chopper spinning. With no training, Chuck is left to fly the machine by himself. Clearly petrified, he loses control, putting himself at risk - despite Casey’s call giving him technical instructions. Realising there is little time, Sarah grabs the phone and encourages him to think of it as a flight simulator. Drawing on his video game experiences, Chuck successfully lands the chopper safely, clearly elated with himself. Sarah is less celebratory, pointing out that his behaviour, given the information he possesses, was irresponsible and that his actions were a sign of a distinct lack of trust.

The morning after, Chuck is still upset with Sarah’s harsh words for him. Despite this, he decides to attend the funeral of Bryce, to help let go of some of his baggage. While there, he sees Sarah, crying.

As he sees her leaving, he thinks of going after her, but decides against it. Nearby, Casey (on the phone to Beckman) is informed that a new Intersect is in the works, and that when it’s completed, Chuck will have to be disposed of - being too great a risk to keep alive.

Later, Chuck returns to the Wienerlicious to apologise to Sarah for his behaviour, as does she. After their reconciliation, she then warns that the missions will become more dangerous and his relationships will become strained - but that it was the price he would have to pay. Ellie, Morgan and Captain Awesome then shuffle in, delighted to see the two back together - and to finally finish their meal together.

Production

This is the first episode of the series in which the changes in the character of General Beckman were implemented. In the pilot, Wendy Makkena was given the role, but was subsequently replaced by Bonita Friedericy. There was also a change in the character’s name - from Mary to Diane, as well as losing the title ‘Brigadier’.
This was the first episode  in which Captain Awesome was referred to as Devon. Previously, he had only been known by Chuck and Morgan’s nickname for him.
The location used for the Buy More in this (and following episodes) was different from the pilot. Although the location and set up of the Nerd Herd desk remains largely the same, some of the store’s arrangements and layout has been changed accordingly.

Flashes:

  • Chuck flashes repeatedly when going through Zarnow’s tests, beginning with an image of a golden rose in front the White House.
  • He flashes again after Sarah shows him the blown out cell phone. This allows him to identify its NSA origins.
  • As soon as Casey mentions the name Elana Truffaut, Chuck flashes, seeing Sarah kill several French assassins.
  • When attempting to rescue Sarah, Chuck flashes after seeing Zarnow’s face for the first time, revealing him to have been selling American scientific intelligence to North Korea for years.
