Actor, director, producer and score composer--Clint Eastwood's done them all. Working on the fringes of Hollywood throughout the 50s, Eastwood got his break when he was cast as Rowdy Yates in the television series Rawhide and then as the Man With No Name in Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy, cementing his place in cinema history as a legend of Western film.
Clinton Eastwood, Jr. was born May 31, 1930 in San Francisco but grew up all over the West Coast as his family moved often to follow work. After settling near Oakland he got his first taste of the entertainment life as a piano player in a bar. Eastwood was drafted into the army during the Korean War but was involved in an airplane crash early on and never saw action. His time in the army did, however, get him acquainted with a Hollywood cameraman who saw promise in Eastwood's rugged look and before long he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a movie career.
After several years of false starts and bit roles Eastwood's breakout came with his role as Rowdy Yates on the popular and long-running Western Rawhide, which paved the way for his being cast as the iconic Man With No Name in Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy. Though the Western roles continued and Eastwood became somewhat typecast as the “tough guy” the wealth he amassed as a result allowed him to form Malpaso Productions in 1968 and launch the directorial phase of his career. Since then he has starred and directed scores of successful films, been nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning four times, and is widely considered to be the most likable actor in movies.
