NBC Still Hates Community Especially Dan Harmon

Community's creator and current former showrunner Dan Harmon is no longer the lead writer on the show. He's been regulated to consulting producer, which you could arguably say is just a title with little input in the final product. Of course, there was a very public rift between Harmon and Chevy Chase a few months ago and whether that was a deciding factor in his demotion is unknown, but I wouldn't be surprised (just disappointed because I'd rather they favour Harmon over Chase).

Now that Harmon is no longer the boss, NBC has hired David Guarascio and Moses Port to run the day-to-day. The writing duo main credits is the very short lived Aliens in America and Just Shoot Me! (neither of which instil much hope in me). Even if this is Community's final season, and a very short one at that, I feel very worried that the core element that made the show stick out from its competition and what made it so unique could be squandered. Two outsiders running a show that has such a non-sitcom, meta, pop-culture feeling that is consistently thinking out of the box and against every sitcom rule could potentially ruin it.

It was by pure grace that NBC granted an ending, but I want to have Harmon run it to the end. It's his show and it's his vision that has made it such a cult hit. But perhaps they're just what the show needs (no...) a fresh voice (noooo) to... I can't say it. THIS IS A BAD IDEA! I'm not going to lie, I don't want two outsiders messing with my Community! There is more to these characters, very delicate elements that make them funny, and I feel that Harmon knows them inside and out and having two new writers will just boil them down to their essentials and write it just like that.

I know I'm crashing down on the two new writers really hard, but I really didn't like Just Shoot Me! mostly because I really don't care for David Spade. And I will have a hard time accepting a Community without Harmon. I hope Harmon will have a major role in crafting the final season, but deep down inside, I fear NBC doesn't want him to.

Well we haven't seen what they've done yet so lets not rush to judgement. This place better than most can probably understand sudden change in leadership.

That said if this final season is ASS I can be ok with Introduction to Finality being the "final" episode of Community. Neither of the two new guys inspire much hope in me to. Hopefully Harmons crew is still around and he rubbed off on them and they can keep things strong.

Is there a link to the actual announcement that Harmon is out as head writer?

@FinalDasa: AVClub IGNtv Harmon hasn't said anything on Twitter but he probably will eventually.

UPDATE: In more news that points to Community S4 being very very different the one remaining writer from Community Chris McKenna is gone via his Twitter :

Nov. '09 I joined my favorite show on TV and today leave my favorite anything ever. Thanks Community, fans, and @DanHarmon. E Pluribus Anus.

@MrMazz: That sucks.

This really doesn't bode well for the show. I hope for one that Chase didn't bump out Harmon and I hope they listen to the existing actors and Harmon as they develop the show.

This could be the death of the show. I'd rather if die after three seasons than see it change into something it's not.

Aliens in America was a critical darling that failed to get ratings.  Just Shoot Me was tolerable for a multi-cam sitcom.

Great now I'm kinda afraid to watch anything in the next season....

Here's hoping that it at least gets a movie with Harmon at the helm somehow...

Dan's just responded on Tumblr. It's the definition of f*cking depressing.

Anyways, this is my curse coming back in full effect. It happens anytime I get into something awesome; it either ends, dissolves messily or starts sucking after having one great year. Examples? 24 (got into in Season 4, had the incredible Season 5 and then... well), Bloc Party (Intimacy, prolonged hiatus), Beastie Boys (To The 5 Boroughs was followed by The Mix Up), Dollhouse (cancelled), Call Of Duty (Modern Warfare was followed by World At War)... See what I'm getting at? And now, this year, the year I finally bit the bullet and got into Community (co-incidentally, the time we in the UK finally got Season 2), it's stuck again.

So, if you would like an actual person to blame for all this, make it me! I don't care! I'm more than happy to help you all get through this! So, come on! Hit me! But, not literally, I bruise very easily.

Well, this is disappointing news following the renewal. I'd imagine Harmon's conduct in the fallout from his initial bust-up with Chase had a pretty large role in this decision. From what that blog is saying, his involvement is completely dissolved, in practical terms at least.

Which leads me to my question: Looking through the credits for individual episodes of Community, it seems as if Harmon didn't necessarily write a substantial proportion of the series. On his blog he mentions that he's a "hands-on producer", with the power to order re-writes and dictate the direction of the show. Now, while losing Harmon will clearly be a big loss, theoretically the pool of writers (unless they leave in solidarity) will remain largely the same - meaning that at least part of the writing talent that made Community as great as it is will remain intact (?). I guess what I'm asking is, will the show be unrecognisable without him? Or just not quite as good?

@skidd: Apparently, there's been a mass exodus of writers since his... let's just call it what it is, firing. And, allegedly, the writing process is almost entirely done by a writer's room. So, Harmon had a tonne of input.

This is worrying...

@jackanderson: Oh...well there goes my hopes for a certain level of continuity. I had hoped that maybe these new guys might not be too bad after seeing they had some involvement in Happy Endings (not near the standards of Community but still enjoyable)...but quickly realised they only had 'Consulting Producer' roles. It's not looking great.

Vulture has a nice piece on the matter. Harmon wasn't Ghandi but most creative types aren't. If him and most of the writers are out this show is F'd unless the new guys are crazy fans of the show. The man says by Prototype 2 and not Diablo 3 not sure if serious.

I just woke up and read Harmon's response and now I am even more troubled. Prototype 2? Nah.

This is upsetting, especially after hearing some of the writers are leaving, too. Hopefully enough of the original writers will stay on (any word from Megan Ganz?) for it to maintain quality. Worst case scenario, it's just the original cast doing dumb stuff for 13 episode, which wouldn't be that bad.
