Death Race is a 2008 remake of the original Roger Corman film Death Race 2000. Unlike the original film, which pitched the rival racers Frankenstein and Machine Gun Joe in a cross-country race to score points by running over civilians, the remake sets the race in a circuit track built within a prison and overseen by the warden. The film's central character is Jensen Aimes (Jason Statham), an honest family man that in the early minutes of the film is framed for the murder of his wife and sent to this very same prison to serve out his sentence.
Not long after arriving, Aimes is presented with an opportunity by Warden Hennessy (Joan Allen). Any racer that manages to win five races is granted freedom. The Death Race's superstar racer, Frankenstein, had already won four, but died in his last race. If Aimes assumes Frankenstein's identity and wins, he'll be allowed to go free, as Frankenstein would have if he had won. Aimes agrees to the terms with the hopes that he might see his infant daughter again.
The plan, however, isn't as simple as Aimes is led to believe. The Death Race is a popular pay-per-view event, and the warden's true goal is to keep ratings up by keeping "Frankenstein" alive and in the race. The previous Frankenstein had actually been killed through an act of sabotage ordered by the warden and enacted by Frankenstein's navigator, Elizabeth (Natalie Martinez).
Once Aimes catches on to the plan, he and his pit crew work together with rival racer Machine Gun Joe Mason (Tyrese Gibson) in order to thwart the warden's plans. Together, both Aimes and Mason make their bid to escape on the final day of the race.
The rules of the Death Race are as follows:
