Dig Deeper into Speed Racer

Based on the 60's cartoon, the idiotically-named Speed Racer is a boy with ambitions to become the world's best racecar driver. Speed lives in the shadow of his older brother Rex, who died while racing, and must prove to his family that he won't succumb to the same fate.

I still need to see this movie.

THANK YOU for defending this movie. I remember seeing this in IMAX with three other friends and having one of the most fun movie-going experiences I've ever had. And no, none of us were stoned at the time; a movie this delightfully silly is just infectious.

The running time was a bit too long and a lot of those rants about race-fixing got seriously confusing, but I always describe this, not as eye candy, but as imagination candy.

Glad I'm not the only person who kinda liked this movie.

Let it never be said that Rorie backs away from a challenge.  Defending this garbage takes real sack.

Just as long as he never tries to defend those appalling MATRIX sequels. ;-)

I enjoyed Speed Racer, although, 2ce may or may not have been involved.

I LOVED this movie. Though everyone I've shown it too has despised it. The day I saw it in theaters, with then girlfriend, was the day she dumped. I'm not sure if it was because of this movie, but that's something that happened.

Still loved it though. I especially liked the way they handle the twist that EVERY Speed Racer fan knows about before going in (you know the one).

Cool beans!

No! NO, NOOOO!!! YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DEFEND THIS MOVIE!

It makes me cry.

I didn't mind this at the time. Maybe a blu-ray viewing is in order

This movie is terrible. No, it's terrible. It's an acid trip in a fever dream in a 5 year old's mind. Not to mention, despite being a kid's movie, it's 2 hours 15 minutes long. Hyperkineticism can only take your movie so far when that's all it has.

THANK YOU for doing this. I was absolutely blown away by the movie, and still maintain that it is, far and away, the most visually spectacular film I've ever seen. I'm glad that you showed off a bunch of the shots showing how completely bonkers the editing and transitions get, because that stuff was just, if you will, off the chain.

Shameless plug for my page on it!
I effing love this movie. It's so good. So amazingly good.
TadThuggishon Nov. 9, 2010 at 6:11 p.m.
Good, this deserves to be done.  The fact is that if you didn't like the Speed Racer movie it's not because it was shoddily made or poorly put-together: it was just fucking Speed Racer, through and through.  If a reviewer who grew up without watching the show "doesn't get it", I understand.  You need reference.  But just because something doesn't appeal to you superficially doesn't mean all the components of an enjoyable film aren't there.  Whether or not you like the feel of a chair doesn't mean it can't support your body weight.  Speed Racer may only appeal to a small category of people, but just because many are excluded doesn't make a film bad.  As much as I (I think rightfully) disagree with the Screened crew sometimes, at least they have this knowledge.

Nonja ha!

Granted, this movie was aimed at kids and from the trailers I saw, didn't seem particularly bad in any way.  Then I read the reviews.  Whoa.

Not saying I will rent this anytime soon but I will say it looks incredibly colorful.

I understand your defense of this movie; it has a moral to it and that is something that does indeed seem to be lacking nowadays.

I agree 100%, I was super worried this movie would be horrendous and refused to see it with my friends when they saw it in theaters..

Years later one of them bought it on DVD and I finally sat down and gave up a night to experience it.
It was worth it, the film is a delight to watch, fun for kids and more than passable for adults. The race scenes are tense and the acting is pitch perfect for most of the characters.
MetalGearSunnyon Nov. 9, 2010 at 6:21 p.m.
I haven't seen it, but from this video, everything looks like it's done on a green screen.
Chadsteron Nov. 9, 2010 at 6:21 p.m.
I always found the movie to be amazingly ugly, which is why I'm always amazed to see people talk about how orgasmic it looks in HD. Bright colors do not make a good looking movie, especially when your greenscreen compositing is godawful.
