Honestly don't think this movie needs defending

I loved this movie, and actually cried at its ending. It deserved to do better, especially considering the success of prior con movies. It is far too under appreciated.
Also, has one of the best soundtracks in recent memory.

Brothers Bloom is amazing.

I think most people who have seen this movie like it. Also the only reason people have not seen it is because it was not released to a large number of theaters. But still a great movie.

Ahaha! South by Southwest!

@demonzen15: It was enough of a box office failure and critical downturn from Brick to warrant this feature.

I like Brick a lot, and liked what I saw of the Brothers Bloom okay.  I own both films but never finished this one.  But what I gathered from both is that Rian Johnson as a writer and director is very talented and clever, knows this to be true and definitely wants us to know it too.  Basically he's a show-off filmmaker, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  I don't get the feeling that either film was trying too hard, I'm just saying from what I can tell in his movies and hearing an interview with him, he is very confident in his work, some might say he's full of himself but I don't really think so.  BUT, seeing the first third of this film hasn't really inspired me to finish it.  And I was captivated throughout the whole of Brick, a movie that was really lacking the polish and budget that this movie has to its credit but ultimately feels more solid.

I haven't seen it. I'm contributing!

I just wanted to say how stoked I am that Defending Your Movie is back. I am doubly stoked for your invisible soda.

Seriously this. This was a much stronger film than Brick, honestly.

I actually enjoyed it more than Brick.

I also really enjoy this movie.

My problem with The Brothers Bloom is the same issue I have with similar visionaries when they lose focus: style over substance. That's super cliche but I think it's true in this case.
Another specific example that comes to mind is Jeanne-Pierre Jeunet's most recent film 'Micmacs'. I'm a huge fan of his body of work with the exception of this film (and yeah, I'm including Alien Resurrection). There are moments in Micmacs that remind me of what makes Jeunet great, but the film derails quickly, and you're left with a mess of useless quirk. An hour and change dedicated to showing me how crafty he is instead of making a movie that makes some fucking sense.
Similarly, for me The Brothers Bloom just doesn't have any focus. I wasn't sure what they wanted me to feel in the end when they spend the first two acts thoroughly entrenched in a whacky caper only to conclude in the stark realism of a totally different movie.
It's like if you re-made 'Hudson Hawk' scene for scene, but then inexplicably had the 'Butterfingers' guy snap Andi McDowell's neck in the end. So like that...

I want to watch this defending your movie but I haven't seen The Brothers Bloom yet... Is this feature spoiler heavy?

I enjoyed Brick partially due to its varying tones between noire crime drama, occasional wit, and bordering lunacy of how serious the crimes being committed were. So hearing that Brothers Bloom has the tone and seems to push it father over the edge intrigues me.
