The long time host of American Bandstand and Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve has died today, after an apparent heart attack, at the age of 82.

Despite having had a stroke only a handful of years ago Dick Clark made a great recovery to go back to his usual hosting duties on New Years. For the longest time he was the defacto host for anything you might want hosted with a great charm.

As a child with a healthy appreciation of old TV and game shows, I grew up watching American Bandstand and Pyramid. Clark was always one of the classiest hosts from that era, and it really feels like the end of that era of television hosting goes with him.

For now, Dick Clark ... so long.

@litrock: He certainly represents that older era of how a host should act. Personable but not like your best friend, kind but not overbearing. He makes Ryan Seacrest look like an understudy.

@FinalDasa: Ah, I think people hate on Seacrest a little too freely. Yeah, he's a bit cheesy, but he's firmly of his era too. I mean, he's no Jeff Winger, but he'll do. =D

Very sad to learn this. I'll miss him. :(

I'm really only familiar with him from the New Years countdown. He made something I couldn't care less about pretty awesome.
