The Hunger Games return with such a sequel twist that you can't believe writer Suzanne Collins didn't think of film when writing. Catching Fire builds up with all types of subversive messaging which is interesting but also brings into relief the limitations of the genre and film.
Dirk Diggler is the porn name of Eddie Adams, the main protagonist of Boogie Nights (played by Mark Wahlberg). He becomes the most successful porn star in the world, and is based largely on John Holmes and his on-screen alter-ego, Johnny Wadd.
Born Eddie Adams in Torrance, California, Dirk Diggler was discovered by adult film director Jack Horner at a night club owned by Maurice TT Rodriguez. Following Dirk's first scene with starlet Amber Waves, it was apparent he was going to be a big, bright shining star. Dirk's star rose to its zenith as Brock Landers, one half of a crime-fighting team hellbent on finding Chico, eating exquisite food, and bedding LA's finest ladies. (The other half of the team was Chest Rockwell, played by Dirk's best friend, Reed Rothchild.) The first film in the Brock Landers series, Brock Landers: Angels Live In My Town, took the adult film world by storm--director Jack Horner would proudly declare it "a real movie"--winning Dirk best actor at the Adult Film Awards.
Unfortunately, drugs and ego got the best of Dirk, and he fell out of favor with Jack, losing his job in the adult film industry and pursuing a hopeless dream to become a big-time recording superstar. Only after a drug heist went horribly wrong did Dirk realize the error of his ways and return to the fold at the Horner household, where he presumably lived out the rest of his days making exotic pictures.
