So... just watched Dirty Harry for the first time. 
 
Spoilers: he shot 7 bullets at the end. 
 
I first went on Wikipedia to check it out - no mention of that. I'm pretty sure I didn't miscount - the movie makes a huge deal about it in the beginning, so I made sure to count. 
 
Is it supposed to be an allegory for faith in God... or something?

It's an allegory for what a gigantic fucking badass bad guy killer Clint Eastwood is.

yup, I dont think it has anything to do with religion
 
it may have to do with the number of colors in a rainbow, or something, not that that makes any sense

Seeing as how it is such an important point in the movie, I'd say they did it intentionally but I wouldn't be able to say why.
