Overview

Known only as " The Doctor," the last of the powerful Time Lords travels across space and time with a various companions in his ship, the TARDIS, righting wrongs and trying to maintain the balance of the universe. Currently in its 6th season since the 2005 reboot, Matt Smith is the current incarnation of the character as the Eleventh Doctor in the popular BBC Sci-Fi adventure series.

Episodes typically have a cold open before the title sequence, which then leads into the episode, which usually runs for 45 minutes, to which the show then gives a preview for the next episode either before or after the end credits. Typically seasons have a over-arching story throughout them, which culminates in the season finale. Usually clues are scattered throughout the episodes first appearing subtly for the first half of the season until somebody comments on these appearances. It's soon after this in the finale that the meaning of these clues is made known, which usually involves a warning or plot involving an enemy of the Doctor planning a war or fight to take over or destroy something or someone.

Production

Doctor Who Reboot Mastermind Russel T. Davies

Shortly after the original show's cancellation in 1989 due to low ratings, the BBC almost immediately sought to give the property to other production companies, specifically American ones in hopes of properly introducing the franchise to the States. Under Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment the show was almost sold as a mid-season replacement for CBS in 1994, but nothing ever came of it. However, the property did catch the eye of the Vice-President of television movies at Fox network, who subsequently commissioned a TV movie that would not only serve as a continuation of the original British show, but also act as a back-door pilot if the movie was popular. With American audiences, it wasn't and received low viewing figures, it was however a massive hit in the UK. But, since Amblin still owned the rights to the property, the BBC couldn't capitalize off its success. By the time the BBC had reacquired the rights, fervor had died down, and attempts to sell the property to film started taking place. These efforts eventually failed as well.

In 2003, the BBC officially announced the franchise would be returning, this time in the form in a continued series on the BBC in a reboot. Russell T. Davies was hired to shepherd the show back after previous discussions with Davies to become a writer on a proposed movie or series in 1999. Davies hired a new set of writers, declared himself chief writer and hired Murray Gold to compose a reworked version of the old theme song, in addition to scoring the series. He also hired former British pop star Billie Piper to be the Doctor's companion, Next, he set about finding the 9th Doctor himself.

Davies first approached actor Hugh Grant for the part, but Grant turned it down fearing the show would be another failure, a decision he he later expressed regret for. Next on Davies list was English actor Christopher Eccleston, whom he feared would turn the part down. However, Eccleston coincidentally emailed Davies first, inquiring if he could get the part. Eccleston was subsequently then hired.

Current Show Runner & Head Writer Steven Moffat

The first episode of the rebooted series aired on March 26, 2005 and was met by both critical and audience acclaim. Still, Davies wanted to adjust the audience to the show and its mythology and thus kept the stories very Earth-centric, with most of the stories taking place in London, where it was cheaper to shoot. In fact, not once does the show actually leave the view of Earth during the entire season. Before the first season had even ended however, news not only came that there would most certainly be a second season, but Eccleston had left the show in fear of typecasting.

Bill Nighy was considered for the role of the 10th Doctor, but the role was eventually given to Scottish actor David Tennant. And while audience reaction was initially extremely hostile after Eccleston's departure, Tennant quickly became a fan-favorite and led the show into an era of great popularity and growth, eventually spawning two spin-offs during Tennant's tenure. Also gained in these years is a renewed interest in American audiences, who first received the show on Sci-Fi, before it was moved to BBC America where it maintains a respectable following.

In 2009, it was announced Tennant would be leaving along with Russel T. Davies after a series of TV movies, paving the way for popular series writer Steven Moffat to take over the show in 2010. Media speculation through out such big names as Russell Crowe , Daniel Radcliffe and even Catherine Zeta-Jones to take the part, but 26-year old Matt Smith was chosen as the 11th Doctor instead. Along with a new cast and crew, the TARDIS was also slightly re-designed, and a new title sequence and logo were also added. Season 5 also met with both critical and audience acclaim, and the show is expected to come back with a Christmas special and 6th season to officially premiere in 2011.

Series 1 (Bad Wolf)

After The Doctor meets a young shop assistant named Rose Tyler while investigating an invasion by the Autons, he invites her to be a companion in his various travels. For their first trip, he whisks Rose to the far-future to attempt watching Earth's final moments, before being distracted by sabotage and murder on the station where they intended to witness the end of Earth. He also takes her to 1860's Cardiff where they discover a rift in Space-Time that will play a major role in future events in the series. Upon returning to present day, The Doctor and Rose witness Earth's first contact with an extraterrestrial being, who they then subsequently stop from blowing up the Earth. This is the first episode that makes explicit reference to the phrase "Bad Wolf," as it's clearly sprayed as graffiti on the TARDIS. The Doctor then travels to Utah where he discovers what's supposedly the last Dalek. It's here we learn that the aftermath of a "Time War" has left The Doctor the last of the Time Lords, and the Dalek-race all but extinct. At the end of the episode the Dalek eventually commits suicide, leaving the Doctor believe he has defeated the last Dalek, and is therefore the last surviving member of the Time War.

The Doctor then travels to the year 200,000 in what is supposed to be one of Earth's golden age, but instead finds it to be anything but, and figures the cause to be Satellite 5, a giant mass media news space station, which is being controlled by a creature called a "Jagrafess," and subsequently shuts down the station & its supposed operators. After leaving the station and eventually arriving in 1941 London after chasing another time traveler named Captain Jack Harkness, who accidentally unleashes a dangerous nano-virus. The Doctor however is able to reverse the virus, and for once, everybody lives. He also takes on Harkness as another companion, at least temporarily.

"I am the Bad Wolf."

After refueling in present-day Cardiff, The Doctor notices the phrase "Bad Wolf" has been following him on his travels recently. Soon after The Doctor, Rose & Jack are inexplicably transported to a game station, which is Satellite 5 a century after their last visit. They find that humanity still hasn't progressed much since their last visit, and again trace it back to the station, which is run by the "Bad Wolf Cooperation." They soon discover that the cooperation and the Satellite have actually been run by the Daleks, who escaped the Time War, and are rebuilding under the leadership of the Dalek Emporer. The Daleks also plan to invade Earth, but not before destroying The Doctor who is putting up a final stand against the Daleks. Rose meanwhile realizes that the "Bad Wolf" phrase is actually a message for her and proceeds to open up the Heart of the TARDIS and absorbs all its energy, eliminating the Dalek army, and spreading the phrase "Bad Wolf" throughout time. The Doctor then absorbs the energy from Rose to keep it from consuming her, but it causes the Doctor to start his regeneration process and he becomes the 10th Doctor.

Series 2 (Torchwood)

While recovering from his regeneration, Earth is invaded once more, this time by the Sycorax. But, The Doctor recovers in time to defeat the Sycorax and send them away from Earth with the express promise they keep peace with Earth. However, as the Sycorax ship flies away, the Prime Minister orders "Torchwood" to destroy the ship so the alien invaders never have a chance to break their promise. They're destroyed with alien technology adapted & discovered ten years prior. The Doctor and Rose then travel to 1879 Scotland and meet Queen Victoria, then have dinner with her at the "Torchwood Estate." During the night, they''re attacked by a werewolf and when the ordeal is over, the clearly shaken Queen orders the creation of an organization named after the estate in order to combat alien forces.

Soon after, TARDIS ends up in a parallel universe where Rose's father is still alive, and the Cybermen are being created, and are planning to take over the world. Eventually the Cybermen are defeated however, and the remaining members are left to the citizens of this alternate world to deal with. The Doctor & Rose also defeat the Devil on a planet orbiting a black hole after it's discovered by a crew that represents "The Torchwood Archives."

When they return to present day Earth, they discover that Earth has now become accustomed to the appearance of "Ghosts." Apparitions that appear only at a certain point in the afternoon, and appear to be helpful or playful. The Doctor traces the source of the ghosts however to Torchwood, and discovers they've been opening a rift to let the "ghosts" visit, not realizing what they were exactly. Before the damage can be undone, the ghosts are actually revealed to be Cybermen trying to cross through the Rift. Soon, it's revealed that the Daleks have crossed through as well and have brought a massive army that intends on destroying Earth. A war then breaks out between Daleks, Cybermen and humans

The Doctor then realizes the only way to end the war and save humanity is to open the rift once more to suck back in the Cybermen and Dalek. The Doctor along with Rose successfully achieve this, but Rose is sucked through in order to secure the Rift to suck back in on itself. The Rift soon closes and the Doctor and Rose find themselves on in different universes, as Rose now permanently lives in the alternate universe they had visited earlier. Her Earth family and friends are all alive in this universe, but Rose is heartbroken that she is now without the Doctor. The Doctor contacts Rose however before the Rift closes forever, and Rose takes the time to express her love to him, but before he can reply, the rift closes. Immediately after however, a woman in a wedding dress appears randomly in the TARDIS and demands to know where she is, as the Doctor wonders how she got there.

It's at this point that Torchwood is spun-off into its own series where Captain Jack Harkness now runs the remains of the organization, and now uses it as a force for good to combat alien forces that aim to harm Earth.

Series 3 (Mr. Saxon)

Picking up exactly where Series 2 left off, The Doctor discovers that bride-to-be, Donna Noble has randomly been beamed from the church aisle to the TARDIS. He drops Donna back off at her wedding, but Donna is soon targeted by a pre-invasion force that's taking the form of robotic Santas and finds herself in need of the Doctor. They soon discover that the Santas are actually working for the Racnoss, who also happens to employ Donna's would-be husband. The Racnoss plan on rising again and taking over Earth, and refuse The Doctor's counter-offer of letting the Racnoss rise, but with the stipulation of having them find another planet. As a result, The Doctor lets the Thames River in and drowns the Racnoss, and Donna pulls out the Doctor before he too is drowned by the rushing water. The Doctor extends an invitation for Donna to join him on his travels, but she turns him down, not wanting part in the Doctor's hectic lifestyle.

Season 3 companion Martha Jones

Later, The Doctor is in a hospital with medical student Martha Jones that is beamed up to the Moon as part of a galactic manhunt that aims to get its fugitive at all costs. The Doctor and Martha catch the fugitive to minimize casualties caused by the galactic police squad, and the hospital is beamed back to Earth, safe and sound. As a reward for helping him, Martha is allowed to join The Doctor on his travels. The pair first travel to New Earth, only to find it in a less-prestigious condition from when we last saw it with Rose. The planet is now home to an eternal traffic jam and The Doctor soon finds the source of the cause and clears up the traffic and opens up the rest of the planet after the population was relegated to the jam due to a deadly virus. To do this however, The Face of Boe, an old and mysterious friend of the Doctor must give his last energy to save New Earth. As his last words however, Boe leaves the Doctor with these words, "You Are Not Alone."

The Doctor and Martha then travel to 1930's New York City and find that the Cult of Skaro, the same group of Daleks responsible for the Rift battle of Series 2, have returned, and plan to make an army of Dalek-Humans in order to survive. However, this plan proves controversial in the cult, and all the Dalek-Humans are killed as a result. Most of the cult is also disassembled with the exception of the dissenter, Dalek Cann, who is able to escape once again. Back in present day, The Doctor and Martha encounter a science experiment being funded by one Mr. Saxon, that de-ages a man, but unstabalizes the user's genes too much.

Series 3 is also home to one of the most acclaimed episodes in the

A Weeping Angel

show's long history, "Blink," a Doctor-lite episode that features a young woman named Sally Sparrow that must save the Doctor and stop alien statues that only move when you don't look directly at them.

After refueling in Cardiff once more, the TARDIS starts dematerializing, but not before Captain Jack catches it, causing it to veer wildly and unpredictably off into space, landing the trio at the farthest reaches of time, where the encounter the last remnants of civilization and humanity, and their hope to find Utopia. The Doctor assists in sending a group off to Utopia, helping one Professor Yana. However, he realizes too late that Yana is actually an acronym for You Are Not Alone, meaning that Yana is actually the long-dormant, but potentially dangerous arch-enemy of The Doctor, The Master. By the time he discovers this, it's too late. The Master has taken the TARDIS back to Earth, and the remaining trio are faced to hop a ride back with the help of a device carried by Captain Jack. But, by the time they reach Earth, The Master has now taken the persona of one Harold Saxon, a mysterious figure that has won the position of Prime Minister, even though nobody really knows why they voted for him.

Of course, he's up to no good, and soon reveals himself at a first contact meeting that The Doctor knows nothing about. The Master reveals that this mysterious race is actually the people that went up in the rocket ship to Utopia, where things went horribly wrong. The Master uses the opportunity to bring the race back to have Earth, wiping out most of its population in the process. In addition, he also uses the TARDIS as a paradox machine, captures Captain Jack, and imprisons and humiliates The Doctor. For a year after this, Martha travels the Earth to gather enough energy to free The Doctor from the prison The Master placed on him. The opportunity is taken and the paradox is broken, rewinding time to when The Master revealed himself, but this time, his so-called wife kills him, thus signaling that The Doctor is truly the "Last" of the Time Lords."

Captain Jack returns to Torchwood, but reveals that he used to be called "The Face of Boe," leading some to believe that Jack could in fact be the giant immortal head The Doctor meets at various times in the future. Still, Martha finds it to be time to depart her company with The Doctor and continue her life. The Doctor then returns to the TARDIS, this time only to find that the Titanic has crashed into the TARDIS.

Series 4 (The DoctorDonna)

Season 4 Companion Donna Noble

Picking up exactly where series 3 left off, the Doctor finds that the TARDIS has inexplicably crashed into the interstellar cruise liner known as the " Titanic," due to the fact it was a popular Earth ship (They seem to know little as to why it was famous). However, the ship is purposefully run into a meteor shower, and set for a crash-course with Buckingham Palace. In his efforts to stop this from occurring, he gains assistance from ship waitress Astrid, whom he grows quite fond of. Ultimately, Astrid gives her life to help stop the collision course, and the ship pulls up before it can hit Buckingham Palace, even though the victory is very bittersweet for the Doctor.

Soon afterwords, an Earth company named "Adipose Industries" catches his attention, and while investigating the shady company, runs into Donna Noble who is also investigating the company in the hopes that she would run into the Doctor again, and become his permanent companion. She eventually accepts the Doctor's offer to join him after noticing he showed humanity in dealing with the Adipose aliens, who were nesting in human fat due to the fact that their planet, Adipose 3, has disappeared. As Donna walks away with the Doctor at the end of the episode, a trans-dimensional Rose Tyler is seen watching the pair before fading away.

The Doctor first takes Donna to ancient Pompeii right before the volcano eruption. But upon further investigation of the volcano, prompted by the strange actions of Pompeii's citizens, The Doctor finds out that Mount Vesuvius is actually part of a plot to convert the human race into Pyroviles, rock creatures who seek to repopulate after their home-world disappeared. The Doctor is thus forced to forcefully blow up Mount Vesuvius to stop the Pyroviles, but at the cost of most of the city's citizens.

Next, The Doctor and Donna visit the home planet of the Ood, who were previously seen in the episodes "The Impossible Planet" & "The Satan Pit" are sold into servitude under the assurance that the Ood want to serve. But upon further investigation, the pair discover that the operation is nothing more than unwanted slavery, which particularly troubles Donna, leading the pair to free the Ood from captivity, earning their eternal respect, especially for Donna. The Ood also leave The Doctor with the prophesy that his "song" would be ending soon.

Their adventures also lead them to stop a war-like race called the Sontarans from destroying Earth by poisoning the atmosphere, solve a supernatural mystery with Agatha Christie, free the inhabitants of universe's biggest library and meeting the Doctor's daughter, who is actually a clone of him. Although he is resistant to her at first, he eventually grows fond of her, but the fondness is short-lived as she is killed trying to stop two warring groups of troubled former terraformers. Eventually, the Doctor and Donna take a vacation on a resort planet, but on route to a waterfall, the Doctor hears of the lost moon of Poosh, Rose Tyler tries to unsuccessfully make contact with the Doctor via the shuttle's video screen, and a mysterious alien force inhabits the Doctor's body, but is stopped by a nameless assistant who, who he later mourns since she gave her life for him.

While strolling the marketplace of another planet, Donna comes across a fortune teller who is able to set Donna up in an all-too real alternate reality where she never met the Doctor, thus letting him die by drowning while trying to stop the Racnoss. Without the Doctor, Donna's alternate world slowly goes to hell as Martha Jones is killed in the hospital fugitive hunt, the Titanic crashes into Buckingham Palace and obliterates most of London, the Adipose wreak havoc in America, and the Torchwood team is killed in defeating the Sontarans and their plans to poison the atmosphere. After the stars start disappearing out of the sky, Rose Tyler approaches Donna and is able to convince her to restore the timeline by traveling back in time and making her former self turn on the path that will eventually lead her to meet the Doctor, unfortunately this mean sacrificing herself in order to set the path correctly, but as Donna dies, Rose gives her two words to relay back to the Doctor in the correct timeline: Bad Wolf. Upon hearing this, a horrified Doctor realizes the end of the universe is nigh.

They soon discover however that Earth has been moved, and upon further investigation, connect it to 26 other planets who have recently dissapeared, including Adipose 3, Pyrovillia and the lost moon of Poosh. When Donna also mentions the disappearance of the bees on Earth, The Doctor is able to trace the location to where the planets have been moved to the Medusa Cascade, which happens to be the inter-universal rift able to hold the 27 planets. They seek help from the "Shadow Proclamation," a galactic police force, but are refused help. Meanwhile, the Daleks are revealed to be behind the move,as they destroy Earth's military targets. Specifically, the Daleks are led by Davros, who was the original creator of the Daleks, and has been brought back by Dalek Caan, who escaped after the Manhattan incident. The Doctor's former companions and acquaintances, including Captain Jack and Torchwood, Sarah Jane Smith, Martha Jones, Harriet Jones, and Rose Tyler band together and are able to send The Doctor the exact location of the Earth so he can reach them. Upon reaching Earth however, the Doctor is shot by the Daleks and starts to regenerate.

However, since the Doctor's severed hand since his first battle with the Sycorax is nearby, The Doctor is able to heal himself, and transfer his regeneration energy to his had, so he doesn't have to change his appearance. However, Donna absorbs the energy of the hand, essentially creating a 2nd Doctor, which is almost an identical clone, except for the fact that he's half-human. Donna herself also absorbs some of the energy herself, creating Time Lord qualities in herself also. Thus, there are two sets of Doctors and companions. The original Doctor and Rose are taken to Davros, while the 2nd Doctor and Donna are hidden safely away in the TARDIS. Davros reveals to the original Doctor that he plans to use the 27 Planets to create a "reality bomb," which has the power to destroy reality itself. But before Davros can use the bomb, the 2nd Doctor and Donna materialize and quickly disable the Reality Bomb and restore all the planets to their original locations. The 2nd Doctor also takes the opportunity to destroy the Daleks and bring about their extinction. The original Doctor offers to save Davros from the destruction, but Davros bitterly refuses.

The original Doctor soon returns all his companions to their rightful homes, and leaves Rose with the 2nd Doctor, since they both have feelings for each other. Donna meanwhile is overwhelmed by the Time Lord knowledge and to save her, The Doctor is forced to wipe her memory, leaving with the warning that her mind will overload if she ever is able to remember him or their time together ever again.

The Specials (He Will Knock Four Times)

An unspecified period of time later, the Doctor returns to earth on easter where he is investigating a special anomaly. The Doctor is joined on the bus by a thief, Lady Christina de Souza. The double-decker bus that the Doctor is travelling on is then is transported to another world, via the anomoly that the Doctor was tracking. Together they discover that the anomaly was created by a swarm of aliens, which create wormholes and travel from planet to planet, devouring everything on the planet and moving on. During this The Doctor is told by one of the bus passengers (who has a latent psychic ability) that the darkness will come, and "He will knock four times". The Doctor manages to save the earth, and divert the swarm to an uninhabited world

The TARDIS next takes the Doctor to Bowie base 1, in 2058. The first human settlement on Mars. The settlement is due to be destroyed, and the Doctor describes that event as fixed, an event that must happen in order for the future of the human race to happen. The Doctor tries to leave immediately after he finds out where he is, and that the base is due to be destroyed that day, however Adelaide Brooke, the expeditions captain refused to let him. It turns out that the ice which the base had been melting for water was infected with a water based organism, which if got back to Earth could destroy the planet.

The Time Lord Victorious

Adelaide decides that the base must be destroyed in order to save the Earth, her death being the main event, that would push the human race out into the universe. The Doctor has a relisation during this that as he is not the survivor of the timewar, but the winner and so declares himself The Time Lord Victorious and that dispite the destruction of Bowie base and Adelaides death being fixed points, time will bend to his desire. He saves Adelaide and returns her to earth, however after being informed of how important her death is to the timeline, she takes her own life. The Doctor then regrets what he has done, and he has a vision of Ood Sigma, though refusing to let himself die he leaves in the TARDIS.

The Time Lords return

Soon after the Doctor is summoned to the Ood home world, where they show him visions of the Master and of his return. The Doctor returns to Earth, but he is too late, the Master has been resurrected and has escaped. During this time he runs into Wilfred Mott, Donna's grandfather. The Doctor explains to him that he's going to die soon. The Master relises that the drumming in his head is not a sign of insanity, but is actually a signal from Gallifrey, sent out by Rassilon, and is being used to break the timelock and allow the timelords to return. The Doctor explains to Wilfred that toward the end of the last great timewar the timelords had become a race entirely concerned with war, and that he had to put them in a timelock for the safety of the rest of the universe.

The Doctor regenerates

The time lords had planned to destroy the universe, end time and ascend to a state of a pure energy. The Doctor, with the help of the Master manages to defeat Rassilon and the timelords are returned to the timelock. During this Wilfred had been trapped in a container which was about to be flooded with radiation, and he was knocking on the door, which was what "He will knock four times" was in reference to. The Doctor absorbs the radiation, saving Wilfreds life. Prior to regenerating the Doctor visits all of his previous companions, and then tearfully states that he does not want to regenerate before doing so alone in the TARDIS.

Series 5 (The Cracks in the Universe)

The fifth series of the show opens with a newly regenerated Doctor crashing his TARDIS in the town in Leadworth. Here he meets 7 year old Amelia Pond, who gives him food and asks him to look at a scary crack in her wall. The Doctor explains to her that the crack is not infact in her wall but in the universe itself he describes it as "two parts of space and time which should never have touched".

He use's his sonic screwdriver to open the crack, in which they see an Atraxi prison. The Doctor then has to return to the TARDIS to stabilize the engines by bringing it 5 minutes into the future, he promises Amelia that he will be back and he will take her with him, but he accidentally takes the TARDIS forward 12 years in time. During that time, Amelia, now called Amy, has seen 4 psychiatrists in an attempt to deal with her imaginary friend 'The Raggy Doctor'. When the Doctor arrives back he relizes that a prisoner from the Atraxi prison has escaped, while his TARDIS is restoring itself due to the damage caused by his regeneration, he must deal with the prisoner himself. He eventually succeeds, but just before prisoner zero is taken back by the Atraxi it tells the Doctor that the Pandorica will open and that silence will fall. After this the Doctor rushes back to his newly restored TARDIS to take it for a test run, but accidentally jumps 2 years into the future. He returns on the night before Amy's wedding and she joins him in the TARDIS.

The Doctor first takes Amy to the future, to the starship UK, where she meets the future Queen and assists the Doctor in saving the life of a starwhale. Although the Doctor and Amy do not see it, there is a crack exactly the same as the one from Amy's bedroom in the hull of the ship. They next travel to Churchills bunker during World War II, where they encounter the Daleks, who are attempting to restore the Dalek race. The Daleks succeed in their plan and manage to escape.

Starship UK

As The Doctor and Amy leave another crack in the universe is shown. The Doctor and Amy next travelled to the Delerium Archive, the biggest museum ever, which the Doctor enjoys visiting to "keep score". Here him and Amy see a 12,000 year old home box with a message carved in it from River Song to the Doctor. They then assist her in defeating an army of weeping angels. The Doctor examines a crack in the universe during these events and it is revealed that anything that gets too close to the cracks is erased from time. The Doctor discovers that River is in prison for the murder of "a good man" and River tells the Doctor that the next time she see's him will be when the Pandorica opens. After the Doctor had defeated the Weeping Angels, Amy told the Doctor that she was getting married, and she then tried to seduce him. The Doctor refused her advances and then gets her fiancé Rory to join them in the TARDIS.

Rory's first trip in the TARDIS is to Venice in 1580, where they encounter a group of Saturnynians who had fled their planet due to the cracks in the universe, through which they saw "Only the silence and the end of all things". After this Amy invited Rory to stay in the TARDIS permenantly.

The Silurians, aka Homoreptilia aka Eocene's aka Psionosauropodamorphae

The TARDIS crew next had a run in with an entity known as the Dreamlord, who trapped them in a dream. After this they visited Wales in 2020, where they encountered a group of Silurians who had being living in suspended animation underground for millions of years. Although the Doctor managed to broker a peace, Rory was shot near a crack, was erased from history, and forgotten by Amy. During this the Doctor reaches inside a crack and pulls out a piece of the TARDIS, indicating that the TARDIS causes the explosion which will crack the universe. Amy and the Doctor next travelled back in time to meet Vincent Van Gogh. After this the Doctor was trapped outside the TARDIS which was unable to land until he found what was preventing it from doing so and stopping it. It turned out to be an abandoned alien ship, which the Doctor described as being someone's attempt at building a TARDIS, it flew away at the end of the episode.

In the two part series finale, we see River Song escaping from prison and summoning the Doctor back to 102AD after learning of a painting by Van Gogh of the TARDIS exploding. The Doctor, River and Amy then discovered the Pandorica buried under stonehenge. River described it as "A box, or a cage or a prison, it was built to contain the most feared thing in all the universe"'.

The Pandorica

The Doctor was bothered by the fact that if something was that powerful he would know about it. Soon after the TARDIS crew discovered the Pandorica it began to open. It was revealed shortly after that the events surrounding the Pandorica were actually constructed by an alliance of the Doctor greatest enemies, and that they scanned Amy's brain in order to create it, inadvertently creating a duplicate of Rory in the process. Once the Doctor was sealing in the Pandorica, an external force took control of the TARDIS, with River inside and blew it up. The Nestene then took control of Rory and force him to kill Amy. The Doctor found a way out of the Pandorica soon afterward by crossing over his own timestream, he then used the Pandorica to save Amy's life. River Song had been put in a time loop by the TARDIS at the moment of the explosion to save her. The explosion of the TARDIS had caused the universe to end, though the Doctor was able to restart it by combing the restoration field of the Pandorica, but at the cost of his own timeline. River then appeared to Amy at her wedding, which caused her to remember the Doctor, and subsequently restore his timeline. After Amy and Rory's wedding they rejoin the Doctor in the TARDIS, where he tells them that he does not know what caused the TARDIS to blow up, and that the silence is still out there.

Series 6 (The Silence)

A Christmas Carol

Series Six Promo

The Doctor decides to take Amy and Rory on a honeymoon and sends them on a cruiseship. The ship however experiences trouble when entering the atmosphere of a planet on which they were supposed to land so Amy sends a message to the Doctor for help. He arrives as he always does, however in order to prevent the ship from crashing he needs to convince the one man on the planet who has control of the weather to save it, Kazran Sardick, he however declines dooming everyone aboard the ship. The Doctor tries to use the device himself to save the space ship, but the controls are isomorphic, and so can only be used by Kazran. While communicating with Amy, there are christmas carolers singing in the background, when Amy asks the Doctor what is that noise he replies with "A christmas carol", giving him the idea to use that story to change Kazrans mind. He does this by using the TARDIS to visit Kazran as a child at christmas (the ghost of christmas past). He also gets Amy and the other passengers aboard the space ship to contact Kazran, acting as the ghost of christmas present, and finally he brings Kazran as a child to come see his future self. This then changes Kazran's mind, and he use's his weather controlling machine to save those aboard the ship.

Sometime after this Amy and Rory return home, and the Doctor tells them that he will be contact. After 2 months they recieve a letter containing a time, date and map coordinates. River Song, who is imprisoned in Stormcage recieves a similar letter, after which she escapes.

Canton Everett Delaware III

The group travel to the coordinates, which is in Utah in America where they meet the Doctor. The Doctor and his companions go to a nearby diner where he informs them that he will be taking them to 1969, but first a picnic. During this the Doctor and River Song seem to be much more in sync, referring to events which neither Amy or Rory know anything about. The group has their picnic at a nearby lake where the Doctor reveals that he is over 200 years older then what he was when Amy and Rory last saw him. During the picnic an astronaut emerges from the lake, and kills the Doctor. It then goes back into the lake and disappears. Shortly after a man named Canton Everett III arrives, also with a letter from the Doctor, with equipment to burn his body. After the funeral, River, Amy and Rory make their way back to the diner, where they meet the Doctor again, while initiall shocked to see him, the group soon deduces that this is a younger version of the Doctor, and he had also recieved a letter from his future self. The Doctor, River, Amy and Rory then travel to 1969 and track down Canton, who they find in the white house meeting with President Nixon. The president had called Canton to meet him as he had been recieving calls from a child, who was asking for help and they could not trace it. While in the White House Amy see's an alien, however forgets as soon as she looks away. The alien kills a white house worker in the toilets which Amy witnesses, but forgets.The Doctor traces the call to a warehouse in Florida, where the group finds a nest of the same aliens, along with a spaceship exactly the same as the one the Doctor had found during "The Lodger".

The Silence

During this Amy tells the Doctor that she is pregnant. While investigating the warehouse, but not aware that the aliens are there, they find a child in the same suit that they had seen at the lake come asking for help. Amy shoots at the suit but misses the child. Events then skip forward 3 months, during which Amy, Rory and River had been travelling across America investigating the aliens, who call themselves ' The Silence'.

First Kiss

The Doctor had been captured and imprisoned in area 51. Once the Doctor and his companions are reunitied they deduce that this is not infact an alien invasion, that they have been ruling the Earth without anyone remembering for thousands of years. They rule by a means of "post hypnotic suggestion", by giving a person orders while they are looking at the aliens. Although they forget the orders, they still carry them out. Amy then tells the Doctor that she was wrong and she is not pregnant. While the Doctor works on a plan for defeating the aliens, Amy and Canton investigate the child they found at the warehouse 3 months previously. The Doctor directs them to look in orphanages. While investigating one such orphanage, Amy and Canton find another nest of the Silence, and Amy finds a room where there are pictures of the child, along with her with a baby. The Silence then kidnap Amy. The Doctor works out a plan to use the post hypnotic suggestion against the Silence, by implanting a message of one of them saying "You should kill us all on sight" into the Neil Armstrong broadcast from the Moon, which although no one would ever remember watching, it would order them to kill any silent that they saw. The Doctor, River and Rory then rescue Amy. The Doctor then returns River Song to her prison cell in stormcage, where they kiss. Back in the TARDIS, the Doctor use's the scanner to check if Amy is pregnant. The TARDIS scanner however cannot give either or positive or negative result, which worries the Doctor.

The Doctor, Amy and Rory next land on pirate ship in 1699, which has been stranded in the ocean. Shortly after arriving they are told about a Siren which has killing members of the crew who have an injury of any description, such as a small cut, or even a fever.

The Siren

The Doctor relises that the Siren can appear through any reflective surface. The Siren targets Rory, although the Doctor and Amy manage to save him. Shortly after the Siren takes several more members of the crew. A storm then hits the ship and Rory is thrown overboard, the Doctor releases the Siren who goes into the ocean to retrieve Rory. The Doctor then allows the Siren to capture them all, after which they are brought aboard a spaceship from another dimension which had been occupying the same coordinates as the pirate ship. The Siren turns out to be the ships medical hologram, which had actually being trying to help the members of the pirate crew by bringing them to sickbay for treatment, and could only pass through dimensions by using reflective surfaces. The pirates decide to remain aboard the spaceship, as some of them need the medical hologram to stay alive, and they set out to explore the universe. The Doctor, Amy and Rory return to the TARDIS where the Doctor performs yet another scan on Amy, though the results are still inconclusive.

A graveyard of TARDIS's

Shortly after this, the Doctor recieves a message leading him to believe that there are other timelords still alive, he traces the massage to a bubble universe which exists outside of normal space time. He does not however find any living timelords, instead a being which devours TARDIS's. The being, known as House, relises the Doctors TARDIS is the last, and so extracts the soul of the Doctors TARDIS and places it in the body of a human woman, and takes control of the Doctors TARDIS and leaves. The Doctor, and his TARDIS in human form, then construct a TARDIS from the remains of various partially eaten TARDIS's in the bubble universe, catch up with House and save Rory and Amy who were trapped aboard. Just before the soul of the TARDIS, was restored, she told Rory that they would need to know for the future that "the only water in the forest is the river".

The Doctor then takes Rory and Amy to Earth in 22nd century. The TARDIS lands on a island, where a group of humans are mining acid, and are creating duplicates of themselves, which they control to do so safely.

Duplicate of the Doctor

The duplicates however, made from "The Flesh" retain all the memories of those from which they are duplicated. After a solar storm, a group of 'gangers' and those from which they are cloned go to battle, believing only one can survive. A duplicate of the Doctor is also created during this time. The two Doctors manage to successfully convince both the humans that the gangers are living beings, and they should be treated as such. As events progressed, the duplicate of the Doctor is destroyed. Once the Doctor, Amy and Rory are safely back in the TARDIS, the Doctor reveals that he visited this time and place to gather information on the flesh. During this Amy begins experiencing pain, and the Doctor says that it is contractions. He then use's the sonic screwdriver on her, and she is revealed to be a flesh duplicate, whom the real Amy has being controlling from an unknown location. Amy then awakens inside an alien birthing chamber, terrifed, and about the give birth.
