Donnie Darko is a high school student from Middlesex. He sees a therapist on a regular basis and has an "imaginary" friend called Frank.
Donnie is an intelligent teenager who is misunderstood by his normal, suburban family. He resents the fact that he has to take medication and see a therapist for what they believe to be Donnie's detachement from reality. He is outspoken to adults, his family and his peers. He tells his teacher to shove a card up her ass for making him do what he thinks is a pointless assignment. Donnie even calls a public speaker who comes to his school, "the fucking antichrist." Donnie sleepwalks and has visions of a man in a bunny suit who tells him the world will end in 28 days. He also has visions of liquid lines coming out of people's chest that predicts their movement. Donnie befriends a new girl at his school named Gretchen, who along with his therapist are the two people Donnie can actually talk to about his visions.
