Dr. Frank Poole is one of the astronauts aboard The Discovery in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Along with Dave Bowman, Dr. Frank Poole is one of the two astronauts not kept in suspended animation aboard the Discovery One spacecraft.
We are not told anything about Poole's family or background but we see a recorded message wishing him happy birthday from his mother and father.
Poole and Bowman conclude that there is a possibility that HAL 9000 could be malfunctioning, as seemingly, it wrongly predicted the
failure of a unit aboard the spacecraft. Poole and Bowman discuss disconnecting the computer whilst taking precautions to not be heard by HAL 9000. Unfortunately for them, the computer is advnaced enough to lip-read their speech and so becomes aware of the astronauts' plans. When Frank goes out in his spacesuit to replace the faulty unit, he is rammed by a pod controlled by the HAL 9000 computer and his oxygen supply is disconnected leaving him helpless in the vastness of space.
Bowman, as quickly as he can manage, comes to the aid of his crew mate. He mans a pod and goes after the body of Poole, who unfortunately has not survived the incident. Bowman grabs the body of Poole with his pod and takes it back to the ship.
Upon arrival, HAL denies Bowman entry forcing him to use the emergency airlock. This must be done with the arms of the pod, and so he has to leave Poole's body to the mercy of the stars in order to save himself and the mission.
