The gang make their way to a mountain's peak to try and convince a resting dragon to leave. However, Fluttershy's fears make the trip quite difficult.
While
tending to the animals at her cottage, Fluttershy's rabbit, Angel, directs her
to the attention of a cloud of smoke bellowing over Equestria. Fearing there
may be a fire in the area, she goes into town to warn the villagers, but her
soft voice and unassertive demeanor keeps them from getting the message. But then
Twilight Sparkle arrives and manages to give them a formal warning on behalf of
Princess Celestia. It turns out that it's not a fire that’s causing the smoke,
but a dragon on a mountain's peak.
At
the library, Twilight brings the girls together to tell them what's going on
in detail. A dragon has chosen to nap on a nearby mountain, and its snoring is
causing a thick cloud of smoke to bellow across the land. She has been warned
that if the dragon does not leave, Equestria will be bathed in darkness for 100
years. So Twilight had been ordered by the princess to gather the girls, head
up to the mountain's peak, and try to convince the dragon to leave without
violence.
After
the girls gear up, they meet back in town. They are all ready to carry out the
mission: all except for Fluttershy, who tries to convince Twilight that she
should stay behind. Twilight believes that her knowledge of wild animals will
come in handy and insists that she stays. Also, Spike will take care of her
animals while she is gone. But Rainbow Dash argues that she should stay behind: in
fact, Fluttershy is even scared of her own shadow so bringing her on such a
quest would only hold the group back.
Regardless,
the girls arrive at the mountain and begin climbing. But as Rainbow Dash
predicted, Fluttershy's fears keep them from making progress. First, Applejack
is forced to take Fluttershy around the mountain since she refuses to climb, or
fly, up the cliff-face. Next, she becomes too scared to jump over a gap, which
turns out to only be a couple feet wide. Finally, she ends up causing an
avalanche; the resulting rubble they then have to climb over, which sets them
back even more.
Finally,
the girls arrive at the entrance to the cave. All are given special
instructions to deal with the dragon, even in the scenario where it becomes
enraged. But Twilight knows it shouldn't come to that, which is why Fluttershy
is there: her knowledge of animals will be useful in awaking the dragon and negotiating
with it peacefully. But
Fluttershy refuses to go into the cave. As it turns out, Fluttershy is scared
of dragons. Despite having little fear of some of the most dangerous creatures
in Equestria, and even being friends with Spike, a baby dragon, Fluttershy is
absolutely terrified of fully-grown adult dragons. Despite efforts to boost her confidence,
Fluttershy straight up refuses to go in and backs out at the most crucial
moment.
Having
come too far to back out now, Twilight enters the cave alone. She tries to convince
the dragon to leave, telling him what the smoke is doing to Equestria. But when
that fails, Rarity goes in to use her charms as a tactic. But this backfires
when the dragon realizes that she simply trying to take some jewels from his hoard.
Pinkie Pie goes in next, dressed in a ridiculous get-up, hoping that laughter
would help liven him up: this immediately fails. Finally, Rainbow Dash
tries using force. She flies into the cave and bucks the dragon in the nose.
This only manages to make the dragon mad.
The
dragon exits the cave and breathes a powerful gust of smoke at the girls,
blowing them into a rock. The rock crumbles, revealing Fluttershy, who was cowering
behind it. But once she sees what it had done to her friends, she finally
confronts the dragon. She takes authority: chastising the dragon for his
bullying, and for hurting her friends, To which the dragon pitifully responds,
"but that rainbow one kicked me." Fluttershy apologizes for Rainbow's
brash actions, but reminds him that it doesn't excuse him for what his smoke
had done to the land and demands an apology. The dragon, now feeling bad for
what he had done, cries. Fluttershy comforts the dragon; reassuring him that
his actions was only poor judgment, and that he only needs to find a new place
to sleep. (Presumably in another country that no one cares about. Or Detroit.)
The dragon leaves, and
the ponies return to town. While Ponyville's weather peagusi clear up the
remaining smoke, Twilight has Spike take a new letter: much to his relief,
having been stressed by Fluttershy's pets. In the letter, she confirms the
success of the mission and how it was all because of Fluttershy. Her bravery to face her fears for the girls had taught Twilight to never lose faith in your friends.
