When a character apparently wakes up from a nightmare, and then gets out of bed and continues on with typical morning routines. Then something REALLY scary happens to the character and they wake up AGAIN and realize that they were still asleep.
This is an effective scare tactic because it does a great job, as soon as the character awakens from the first nightmare, of making the audience feel safe and that everything is okay because it was just a dream. And then of course something scary begins to happen, usually quickly, and right as the scare becomes most intense the character will suddenly awaken usually by jolting up in bed and gasping for air and probably sweating too.
