• Milton's friend Webster was named after "The Devil and Daniel Webster", a short story about a man who defends a New Hampshire farmer that sold his soul to the Devil for 7 years of prosperity.
• The main character, John Milton, is named after the 17th-century English poet of the same name. His most famous piece of work was Paradise Lost, an epic poem about the Fall of Man brought about by Satan.
• The script was influenced by many classic car chase movies of the 70s such as Vanishing Point and Duel.
• The three cars that Nicolas Cage drives in the movies are a 1964 Buick Riviera, a 1969 Dodge Charger and a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle.
