El Topo has become a cult classic due to its heavy religious symbolism and strange use of maimed and dwarf characters.

The title "El Topo" means "Mole." The meaning behind this is that the main character is like a creature who lives underground, in the darkness, but eventually burrows his way upwards into the light.
