Emma Watson is best known for portraying Hermione Granger in the film adaptations of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. In 1999, casting began for the first in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Watson was already a fan of the books before auditioning for the role, after being directed to casting agents by her Oxford theatre teacher. Because Daniel Radcliffe (who plays title character Harry Potter) wasn't found in the main casting process, Watson and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) had to audition many times alongside lots of potential actors for Harry. Eventually David Heyman, producer on all eight films, sat them down in his office and told her that she was the "preferred candidate" for the role.

Watson had some hesitations about signing up for the last two (later to become three) Harry Potter films, Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows. She wanted to ensure that her acting schedule would not conflict with her further education. Eventually a deal was struck and Watson, along with Radcliffe and Grint, signed up to complete their respective roles. In a statement from Warner Bros. announcing the news, Watson concluded that she loved playing Hermione and could never let her "hero" go.

Other acting

Watson's first professional acting work away from the Harry Potter was in Ballet Shoes, a 2007 BBC made-for-TV film adapted from Noel Streatfeild's novel of the same name, broadcast on Boxing Day. Watson played the main role of Pauline Fossil, an aspiring actress and one of three sisters. Of Watson, writer Heidi Thomas said and that "She is maturing rapidly as a young woman and as an actress – her work is sensitive, subtle and intelligent". Watson herself said she was ready to go back to school, but fell in love with the script and couldn't resist taking the role.

Her second stray from the Potter franchise was in a 2008 animated film The Tale of Despereaux, a children's comedy based loosely on the book of the same name by Kate DiCamillo, in which she voiced Princess Pea alongside Matthew Broderick. She found the process of being in the studio recording by herself "quite strange" and "tough", but noted that it was a fascinating process to learn how animated films were made. One of the directors Robert Stevenhagen said that Watson was "fantastic" in the role.

Most recently, Watson completed filming for My Week with Marilyn, due for release in 2011, playing a small role as Lucy, a wardrobe assistant at Pinewood Studios. To prevent her university studies being interrupted, Watson only spent a few days on set. Harvey Weinstein, executive producer on the film, said that Watson 'has an elegance about her" and that "she has a gift for comedy and drama, and we're just starting to see her range".

She has signed on to the role of Sam, alongside Logan Lerman in an adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a coming-of-age novel based around a 15-year-old outsider. The book is written by Stephen Chbosky and he adapted the screenplay himself for the film. Filming begins in the summer of 2011.

Watson has modelled for luxury British fashion house Burberry. She fronted their new campaign during their Autumn/Winter 2009 collection and appeared again in Spring/Summer 2010.

Watson also has involvement with People Tree, a Fair Trade and sustainable fashion brand that helps disadvantaged groups in Bangladesh, India and Nepal.  She acted as a creative adviser and injected her own personal style into the Spring 2010 range, a role which she was not paid for. The range included items like knitwear, cotton T-shirts, jersey dresses, poplin skirts and shorts, all designed to be clean and easy to wear.

Fashion is a great way to empower people and give them skills; rather than give cash to charity you can help people by buying the clothes they make and supporting things they take pride in. It’s that simple.
- Emma Watson discussing People Tree with the Daily Mail

Watson also teamed up with People Tree again for their Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. She visited the Dhaka (Bangladesh's capital) slums and compared it to the quality of living in Swallows (the Fair Trade community supported by People Tree) and found it impressive how the women used Fair Trade clothing to empower themselves and their children in order to escape poverty. Watson noted that, having been given a lot of opportunities in her life, this was one way to give something back. Her third and final involvement with People Tree was for their Spring/Summer 2011 collection, launched to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight, which starts February 28.

After seeing Watson's work with People Tree, designer Alberta Ferretti approached her and asked if she was interested in doing something similar with her. The collection is described as being "very classic; very 60s Jane Birkin" and is due to be released in Spring 2011.

Personal life
