Rules the galaxy by fear. Dark Lord of the Sith.
Leader of the Galactic Empire and Lord of the Sith, the Emperor is one of the most evil movie characters of all time the Emperor actually never appears in a Star Wars film until Empire Strikes Back and only in a minor role. He finally appears in full force in Return of the Jedi where he is shown as the one pulling the strings to turn Luke Skywalker to the dark side of the force.
Palpatine appears earliest chronologically in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. In this film, he is a Senator from Naboo and he manipulates Queen Amidala of Naboo to call for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum. Palpatine is subsequently elected Supreme Chancelor and put into a position of more power. Palpatine leads a double life as a Sith Lord, Darth Sidious. In Episode I, he is seen speaking with member of the Trade Federation and giving orders to his apprentice, Darth Maul. Palpatine coordinates the invasion of Naboo which prompts his rise to power.
Witht he death of Darth Maul in Episode I, Palpatine initiates a new apprentice, Count Dooku, who had recently left the Jedi order. With his powers as Supreme Chancellor, Palpatine initiates a Galactic war between the Republic and Sepratist armies during the events of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Palpatine encourages Separatists to engage in war and secretly raises an army for the Republic as well as manipulates emergency powers for his office.
In Episode III, Palpatine replaces Dooku with Anakin Skywalker, using the immanent death of his wife, Padme Amidala as leverage. Initiating the fall of the Republic and the Jedi, Palpatine proceeds to declare the Republic over and creates the first Galactic Empire and nearly kills all of what is left of the democracy that was the Republic. He also fights Yoda with a lightsaber. The fight ends with Yoda in defeat and sennds himself into self imposed exile.
Palpatine first appears having a hologram conversation witn Darth Vader in Episode V. He is convinced by Darth Vader to attempt to turn Vader's son, Luke Skywalker, to the Dark Side.
Palpatine visits the second Death Star in Episode VI. In the film's climax, he tries to seduce Luke Skywalker to the Dark Side. When his attemps fail, he begins electrocuting Luke with the force. Seeing his son being murdered, Darth Vader turns on the Emperor, throwing Palpatine down a deep shaft, resulting in an electrical explosion and Palpatine's death. Luke escapes on an Imperial Shuttle craft, but his father succumbs to his injuries during the battle.
Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine, said that every time he has played a villain, he has tried to find at least one good quality in each of these characters. Palpatine was the only one he has been unable to do this well for, the only thing he could come up with was that he was a patron of the arts, as seen in Star Wars Episode III.
Most Sith use anger and hatred as the source of their powers which slowly transforms them into creatures of evil. Palpatine is no different and is one of the worst. Through years of passed down Sith knowledge, Palpatine learned how to hide his affinity to the Force even among Jedi as well as the political aptitude to manipulate the entire galaxy into war and to give him complete control of the Republic.
