Remember when Spielberg films had this much meaning and depth behind them?

TekZeroon Oct. 12, 2011 at 11:16 a.m.

Ever since ET scared the crap out of me when I was 4, I've never seen the whole thing through.

Saving Private Ryan, A.I., Munich...yep, I do.

I am not gonna lie when thinking about this movie again as Rorie went through the symbolism of characters and plot I started to tear up again. Good work Rorie. Probably going to watch this movie again soon.

I really hate that movie. Once and never again.

Ah man, nice analysis, Rorie. Never thought of the film that way. In a class of mine, I wrote a paper about Spielberg's Close Encounters being about the collapse of the traditional family structure in the 70s (note Dreyfuss's character literally burying his home) and also the welcoming and acceptance of the new forms of family. It isn't the best thing I've written, but if you're interested I'll send you a copy.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun thinking about a film like that and I love how these analysis videos do the same. We need more!

I haven't seen E.T in a while but it probably had the biggest impact on me as a kid, more so than even Star Wars, Neverending Story or any other major movie of that era. My first dog was going through a really rough patch at the time (he sadly died a few months later) and the relationship between Elliot and ET struck me as that of a kid caring for his pet. The shot of a dying ET by the river has stuck with me to this day. And the authorities' handling of ET reminded me of how I saw the doctors trying to take away my dog at the time.

Anyway, that was my oddly personal spin on this movie but Rorie's interpretations makes so much more sense. Kinda surprised this was a Bestie feature but I like you guys digging deeper into the classics in video format for a change.

That's harsh. Of his recent movies, Munich, AI and Minority Report have substantial symbolism or deal with complex issues. One Crystal Skull doesn't nullify a decade's worth of movies.

Wow, I never thought of it that way. Thanks Rorie!

What an unforgetable experience.

Colonel_Furyon Oct. 12, 2011 at 11:58 a.m.

I've never seen E.T. It just never came up.

Beachon Oct. 12, 2011 at 11:58 a.m.

As Mr. Rorie woul say: "That was legitimately compelling"

I had a chance to see E.T. in a theater over the summer. It was the first time I'd seen the movie in about a decade. Absolutely incredible.

Man, now i need to see E.T, I've only really seen it twice I think, but the scene where Elliot rides off the cliff and begins to fly got me pretty choked up. Great interpretation, I'd never even considered this movie to be anything other than a literal tale.

I'd LOVE to see more features like this, it was great.

Hello childhood, it's been awhile.

dvorakon Oct. 12, 2011 at 12:19 p.m.

I've never seen E.T. But having never seen it as a kid, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't appreciate it at all. I have basically zero tolerance for child acting.

endaroundon Oct. 12, 2011 at 12:23 p.m.

Hey its a movie with child actors that Rorie doesn't hate!

I don't think I have ever liked E.T and I still don't.

WJiston Oct. 12, 2011 at 12:51 p.m.

I feel like I rode the ride at Universal Studios more often than I saw this movie, which kind of sucked the big moment out of the riding-a-bike-across-the-moon scene.

Also, nice ending Joey.
