Eric Bottler has been completely focused on furthering his career and hopeful to gain control of his father's car sales business. While attending a friend's Halloween party he is reunited with his old high school friends: Hutch, Windows, Zoe, and his former best friend since the 1st grade, Linus. It's apparent right away his friends haven't changed a bit since high school, still obsessed with Star Wars. They hang out at the party and Eric is disappointed at the juvenile view his friend's still have, especially with an ancient plan to road trip to California and break into George Lucas' Ranch and steal a copy of Star Wars Episode 1 and watch it for themselves.
Eric is surprised by his friends the next day when Windows and Hutch show up at his work. They tell him Linus is dying with terminal cancer and doctor's are telling them he only has about 4 months to live, just enough not to see Episode 1. Eric is rejuvenated in hopes of rekindling his former friendship with Linus and decides it's now or never for the road trip to Lucas Ranch.
After some convincing of Linus the group takes off for Texas to meet up with Windows' online girlfriend he has been obsessed with who claims to have inside access within Lucas Ranch. While everyone is sleeping Hutch decides to take a small detour to Iowa. Specifically the birthplace of James T. Kirk where hardcore Trekkies travel to pay homage. There the group, with Eric in the van, harass the Trekkies and once one of them calls Han Solo a "bitch" they fight. Eric drives in and Hutch gets behind the wheel of his van again to run over the Trekkies beloved Kirk statue before taking off.
Again on the road to Texas the van gets a flat and the boys are forced to walk to find help. They stumble into a local cantina and get hassled. When they aren't able to pay $100 for a glass of water and Hutch provokes what turns out to be a gay biker bar they are forced to be their entertainment. The guys strip for the gay bikers only to be stopped by "the Chief". "The Chief" rescues the guys and gets them very high on some weed guacamole. Linus begins to understand life while really high and in the morning the guys awake to find "the Chief" has fixed their flat and gives Linus some peyote for the road.
Back on track and finally arriving in Texas, Windows dresses up and enters Java the Hutt to meet his girlfriend Rebel Leader, who turns out to be 10 years old. After the sudden shock of her age the group attempts to focus only to have nerd icon Harry Knowles looking for Windows, the guy who has been talking to his kid cousin. After Knowles beats the guys up they manage to tell him their plan, and after he quizzes them on their Star Wars knowledge, Knowles lets them in on his source into breaking into Lucas Ranch. The boys head to Vegas to meet with Knowles' source.
Hutch speeds to make good time only to noticed by a cop. With a bag of peyote in the car the guys decide to punch it into "hyperdrive" eventually crashing. Now in jail, they contact Zoe and she is able to bail them out. The judge, Billy Dee Williams, spares the boys any legal trouble. Zoe refuses to return home after traveling so far just to be sent home.
Finally in Vegas, Linus and Eric head off to meet their contact. Hutch and Windows eye to beautiful woman by some slot machines and flirt with them. Somehow Hutch and Windows are able win the girls over only to realize after their hour is up, they were hookers. Unable to pay the girl's pimp shows up and demands his money, noticing his "sweet" Star Wars tattoos they distract the pimp long enough to run away. Linus and Eric are thrown out of a nearby Star Trek convention while searching for their contact and in the darker recesses of the casino find who they were looking for. William Shatner hands over everything the group needs to get into Lucas Ranch along with a signed copy of one of his books. Just after getting what they needed Linus and Eric realize they have been spotted by the same Trekkies who they accosted in Iowa and run away.
The whole group find one another running from pimps and Trekkies only to be spared when the Trekkies once again make the mistake of calling Han Solo a bitch and the Star Wars fan pimp attacks the Trekkies. The group escapes but while driving off in a hurry Linus is thrown from the van. Linus is taken to a hospital where his doctor, Carrie Fisher, won't allow him to leave because of how sick he is. When the group refuse to give up on Linus' dream they escape.
All of the fanboys make it to Lucas Ranch and successfully break in. While searching for editing bay 3, where they believe the film will be, they are seen on camera by the guards and after a brief chase are captured. George Lucas hears of their story and allows the group not to be punished, and after another Star Wars quiz, Linus and only Linus is allowed to watch the movie.
Six months later we rejoin the same group of friends, minus of course their friend Linus. They are camping out for Episode 1 and its opening night. Just as they sit down to watch the first new Star Wars film in over a decade, they toast snuck in beers to their friend Linus.
