A look at Chris Nolan's Ultra Low Budget "Following" Reviewed by ztiworoh on Aug. 3, 2010. ztiworoh has written 11 reviews. His/her last review was for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. 18 out of 18 users recommend his reviews.
Now enjoying its third straight week at the top of the box office, Christopher Nolan's Inception is unquestionably the must-see movie of the summer. Assuming you've already seen the mind-bending dreamscape thriller, there's a good chance you might want a bit more Nolan in your life. Well, luckily, his first film Following has been added to Netflix Watch Instantly to coincide with the release of Inception.

Made on an ultra low $70,000 budget, and shot on location in London using 16mm black and white film, this 1998 noir thriller displays much of the talent that would go on to make Nolan one of Hollywood's biggest directors. Many of the hallmarks of his later films are here with scenes presented in non-chronological order, an intricate plot which slowly comes together, and even a thief named Cobb.

Like many of Nolan's films, this one is hard to discuss without giving too much away. Following centers around an out-of-work writer who becomes obsessed with following people on the street. Eventually, he befriends one of his targets, a small-time burglar, who draws the writer into his illicit work. While just over an hour, this film still feels like a slow burn, but one worth watching if only for its brilliant Hitchcockian ending.

A word of warning for those who do choose to check this one out, its low budget means there are some rough edges. The audio mix seems noticeably off in some scenes and the acting doesn't quite do the plot justice. Even so, this is a great look into the early years of a highly acclaimed and influential director. If you're looking to fill the Inception-shaped hole in your life, check out Following on Netflix Watch Instantly.
