I've been buying many DVD's at once recently, mainly because buying a pile of DVD's actually inspires me to watch them instead of put them on the shelf and forget they exist. So here we go, the attempts to get a week's worth (more than four then I guess, seven is just too specific) of movies to watch for less than it would cost to go out and buy some high flying new release on DVD. Here we go, attempt #1!
Yes Man [2008]
Purchase Price (inc postage): £2.27

Incredibly surprised by this movie. Jim Carrey in a surprisingly modern movie that takes his best traits without blasting them directly into your face. A feel good movie with plenty of humour and a good lack of mushy crap that makes you want to remove your vital organs. It has some rather cliché moments here and there, and there's a rather weird plot twist that breaks the pacing a little bit and sours the plot somewhat, but it's a really enjoyable movie that's certainly worth a watch.
Recommended? Hell yes.
Animal House [1979]
Purchase Price (inc postage): £1.53

A true classic that once again remained on the list of "never seen before." Sure, it's old and a little dated, but it's totally worth a watch just for the many references you've missed out on over the years. Only now I know why Green Day lie down and play quietly during their cover of Shout live. You'll finally work out why the creepy old guy from Family Guy climbs up the ladder. Jim Belushi is genius in this, and it has me hoping to watch more of his work.
Recommended? Sure!
Analyze This [1999]
Purchase Price (inc postage): £1.29

Remebered seeing a trailer for this many years ago and having been a fan of Friends at the time, I wanted to see this for the inclusion of Lisa Kudrow. For clarity, I was, and still am, a very stupid person. I like Robert De Niro but I'm not a huge fan of Billy Crystal. It's a pretty decent movie, but it's not particularly funny, and it's not particularly interesting.
Recommended? Maybe. This movie has limited appeal eleven years on, so probably only important for fans of the two, or maybe fans of something like Meet The Parents.
Beverly Hills Cop [1984]
Purchase Price (inc postage): £1.25

A classic I had yet to see in full, and it didn't disappoint. Eddit Murphy in full swing, full of energy without becoming annoying. Iconic music that although Crazy Frog tried to machine gun to death, is actually still brilliant. It manages to balance the line between action set-pieces and comedic moments without tipping the balance too far in either direction. I'm curious how the sequels fare, but the original is pretty great by my standards.
Recommended? Of course, it's a classic.
Be Cool [2005]
Purchase Price (inc postage): £1.41

This was a recommendation from a friend. Never seen Get Shorty, and I should have seen it before this. John Travolta and Uma Thurman walk through this hideously scripted movie full of "inside jokes" and casual stupidity. It features Cedric the Entertainer, who is even more annoying than his name, Vince Vaughn, who plays an irritating tit, and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson playing a part that feels just a little too written for him. Cameos litter the movie like turds in a litter tray, and jokes miss left and right. If you absolutely have to see everything that John Travolta has been in, then maybe this is the only reason to watch this, but otherwise, AVOID.
Recommended? Fuck no!
Grand Total: £7.75
So this was way cheaper than one new release, but I got four good movie experiences out of it, and one that made me never want to watch a movie ever again. The next set of DVD's are already on their way to me, so expect another one of these fairly soon!
