DVD/Blu-Ray: Always A Bridesmaid, Never An Aliens Vs. Avatars

I added Aliens Vs. Avatars, a film that's coming out today on DVD, to our database, but for some reason it won't show up on search, so I can't add it to the list below. I...I'm strangely OK with this situation. I'm still totally going to buy this film and watch it, or at least get it from Netflix, and I hope to at some point muse philosophically on it in this space. Stay tuned.

Beyond that fine example of cinema, Bridesmaids is the big winner in the DVD release pile this week, with a bunch of direct-to-DVD stuff coming up behind it. I am, of course, most looking forward to Spooky Buddies, which features puppies dressed up in Halloween costumes. They talk to one another. That's pretty adorable.

1. Bridesmaids

I look forward to checking this out after hearing so much about it all summer long. Certainly the relatively-surprising hit of the last few months. It'll be curious to see what the permutations are here: a film obviously inspired by The Hangover made more than enough money to inspire its own copycats in a year or two.

2. Spooky Buddies

OH WHO'S ADORABLE? Talking pups are adorable, that's who. Why didn't anyone tell me that Disney has made like four of these movies? I mean, it's a movie about dogs in Halloween costumes. And they talk. That's adorable.

3. Set Up

I really don't understand why Bruce Willis is agreeing to be in a direct-to-DVD movie with 50 Cent. Did his daughter need a new fleet of cars or something? Or was he just afraid he'd get shot or something otherwise?

4. We Are The Night

Lesbian German vampires. Sure, I'll check this out. One of the imdb reviews proudly proclaims: "In the end, I loved this film. My vote is seven out of ten." Harsh kind of love, there, buddy!

5. Bride Flight

I guess a bunch of new brides are flying to New Zealand, or something, only to be tempted by petty jealousies and the roving hands of a rakish pilot. I forget, honestly. I read the description when the movie hit a couple of theaters six months ago and I barely remember it. And I can't be bothered to look it up. Sorry.

6. Fringe

In TV dvds, choose from among: Fringe, Season 1-3, Hawaii Five-O: Season 1, Body of Proof: Season One, Law And Order: Los Angeles: The Complete Series, Mike & Molly: Season One, The Mentalist: Season 3, Raising Hope: Season One, Supernatural: Seasons 1-6, Vampire Diaries: Seasons 1-2, The Kennedys, or Happy Endings: Season One

Is that the movie that 50 Cent lost so much weight for? I just remember seeing that one image of him looking extremely gaunt, and then never hearing about the movie again.

Inspired by The Hangover, with fewer laughs, a lot more plot and infinitely more heart.

I would suggest Rorie that you just wait until Spooky Buddies shows up on Disney Channel. If the other Buddies movies are any indication, they'll show up on DVD in literally three weeks for whatever holiday they're created to promote. Yes, they're holiday tie-ins, which means there's a Buddies movie where you can watch them go on adventures in Santa Claus costumes! Probably to save Christmas.

And while loving adorable puppies in costumes is a....noble pursuit, the kids' voices kinda ruin the whole thing, dontcha think? I mean, they're the lowest ladder of Mouse House "talent" - these kids who hang around purely to do voicework for their cheapest straight-to-DVD titles make Selena Gomez look like Meryl Streep. This is a loooooong, looooooong way from the quality of their straight-to-DVD 'toons like the Tinkerbell movies, Three Musketeers with Mickey, Donald and Goofy, or (I assume) Planes. Plus, they're that insincere, early 2000's sort-of Disney multi-cultural ensemble. Just the worst kinds of kids. Ugh.
